Years ago I used to see things written about a fella I believe was in Canada who made pipes from burls from trees that were dead. It's been several years now since I've seen that mentioned. I've always wondered it if it actually would make a difference in how a pipe would smoke.

Julius Vesz is still making pipes barely. The last I heard he was being forced to move shop from the York hotel. He has a website and there are pipes for every budget there from 100 to multiple thousands all made from dead root briar. I have 3 and cant swear to a difference but they are great pipes and light.

Never smoked a Live Briar pipe before, does it scream when you light it?

Never smoked a Live Briar pipe before, does it scream when you light it? Those live ones are tricky to light with all of that squirming they do. I've seen a few of his pipes while browsing, some are beautiful.

I've been to his shop in the Royal York and his workshop/museum was an amazing place. He was nice to me but he had a reputation as a curmudgeon and a real asshole. There was a lot of bad blood years ago. He made his name in the USA through the Uptown's mailers and Great Carvers Video series. At one time I had a small collection of his pipes but am down to a large "Canadian" Hand Cut in his signature Ox Blood red stain. I saw one of my castoff Vesz Hand Cut's at the NASPC show and had a pang to buy it back. Check out his feature in P&T and his Great Carvers video (if you still have a VHS player) if you can find them.
