Some years ago I was in a smoke shop here in Carolina.I got into a conversation with a fella who said he was a sales rep for Dr. Grabow pipes. At that time they sold for around 20 dollars. He told me something that I hadn't considered before. He said that pipes in that price range accounted for about 80 percent of Briar blocks sold.Without those sales he said those who process an sell briar blocks would charge much more for the better blocks that go to make high grade pipes. So I guess it's good that folks who make and sell lower end pipes are still around.

Many of those "lower priced" pipes are what get people into the hobby. Without them the price of entry would be too high for most so they definitely serve a purpose.

It's amazing to me that docs have sales reps! That would be a fun job. I love their pipes and still smoke my doc grabows almost every day.

Very true...my docs are great smokers...they are from the 50's. Edwards are wonderful smokers...I only have 2 that were sent to me from AJ, a great friend and brother.

I love my Grabow. It was my first briar and is my most smoked briar. I love the color it has turned. Right now it's full of Billy Budd Blonde.

Probably 3/4 of my herd are lower priced pipes. A couple DGs,a few Willards, and several no-name or seconds (actually thirds). But,they all smoke great, and when I pass one on it's cleaned and reamed. My favorite is the Doctor Grabow Savoy my wife picked out. I'll gladly admit that if it wasn't for the "lower end" pipes,I probably would have stuck to cigars.

With pipe tobacco it's a much milder smoke (for me), and it's the cheap corn cob that helped me to hone my technique.

Pistol Pete 1911 I cut it after that pic. In all honesty, it wasnt that long. I smashed that thumb with a sledge hammer a couple years ago. I turned 1 bone into 5 and had to have surgery. Pretty messed up. I had somewhere around 50 stitches in my thumb at the ER. 3 days later I had the surgery. I missed 1 day of work. I still have pics of it, but I wont disturb anyone with that mess.
