Well, since lightning torched my TV, my Xbox, and my Plex media server, I am in a rare mood. I just bought a new TV and hung it, and I will be ordering my new NAS and hard drives tomorrow, so since I could not bring myself to go to work tomorrow, I think I am going hitting a bunch of antique shops to see if I can find any pipes. I have a few ideas of where I am heading, but it just seemed like a nice relaxing day after being raped by Mother Nature last night. I spoke to my insurance agent, and insurance should cover most of the replacement parts. Thankfully, I have become responsible enough to keep a healthy "emergency fund" in the bank, so it is all just a small hiccup financially but a disaster in terms of time to be given to having to redo all the movies. I am also thinking of having a whole house surge protector installed, since our neighborhood is prone to strikes.
Wish me luck, crew! Now, what do I want to smoke tonight?

Sorry for your disaster. I've had to replace window A/C's that were hit with a surge when lightning struck near by. Nothing you can do to prevent it. Not sure a whole house surge protector will help if hit by lightning. But I may be wrong.

If it strikes the house, there is little you can do, but the whole house can help with nearby strikes. The one last night about about three streets over. Misguided peace of mind is still a form of peace of mind.

That sounds like a plan. Reminds me of how much I loved my job, but loved blowing it off more

My TV and surround sound stuff is behind a 70 lb isolation transformer and a 2kva Smart UPS. When we get a surge the voltage regulator jumps and shakes the whole house. I have been looking for a surplus industrial line stabilizer, something about 500 to 2k lbs to protect the house. 2 years ago we lost 3 TVs, 2 computers and a bunch of small and not so small gadgets. The high end UPS is pretty effective by itself. But $500 for every room in the house is a lot of money.

Enjoy pipe hunting. I hope you're successful. I've not had much joy over here, but we have less antique shops and more charity shops, and most of them raise money for cancer research. I'm pretty sure they won't have devices that the majority of people assume causes cancer.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, but hopefully you will find a few nice pipes on your quest.
Good luck!

If you go to antique shops with the expectation that all you will see are burned up Grabow's and chipped and busted meerschaum pipes that are way overpriced it will lessen disappointment. I still enjoy looking through the stores and have made a few good buys though.

Do as I do and don't go looking for pipes. The good ones will find you in the most unlikely of places.
Don't forget to negotiate down from the asking price. You should get at least 10% off. My last trip I managed to get a 25% discount.

Might want to get a GOOD surge protector for your audio and video equipment this time. Has saved mine several times including my PC. It really rains in Texas and lightening and strong winds accompanies it 99% of the time. And yes the thunder literally shakes the house. Here in Utah now its a joke, when they say its raining its not even enough to wash the truck off. If I stand in it for awhile I might get damp. LOL!

He's probably hasn't made it home yet.
On the other hand, my latest antique/flea market finds arrived today - a Ben Wade Martinique made in Denmark by Preben Holm and the bowl of a Ben Wade Royal Grain, also made in Denmark.

Well, no success for my pipe hunt, but I did not really have any expectation of finding a random Dunhill. At least I do not have to drive by those antique stores anymore and wonder what may be in those shops. And, with everything over the past few days, it was more about the relaxation from the shopping rather than the actual finding.
The new TV is up just in time for football. The new receiver will be in on Monday. Dealing with insurance now, but it has been easy so far. Being an insurance defense employer, I kind of know what to do to make it easier on the adjustor...and then easier on me.
Going with a Leviton whole house protection system eventually. Looking for a good electrician now.
Thanks for the good wishes and sympathies. It's never unappreciated.

I have been in South Louisiana , retired for about 15 years, no bargains here, and no pipes , my wife is a World Class shopper and I ask her to reconiter for me and she found only one a Gourd Calabash, thrift shop wanted 75$, said it’s a rare pipe, I said No Mam it’s not, it’s worth about 35 or 40$. Wouldn’t go down. Where Pappyjoe lives, North of the Lake Ponchatrain, Slidell area is more conducive to finding bargains with jaunts into Mississippi. I have made trips to Dayton Texas to visit my son and Man oh Man do they have craft shops , but no pipes. The only time I found pipes was in a little trader trash shop, coked up, beat up, run of the mill brands, owner wanted 35$ a piece. So here you just as soon as get a basket pipe as not.

I've got to wait till I can afford to replace everything I gave up when I moved to Utah, SS won't make anyone rich so I must wait till the money is saved before heading back. I estimated March I would be ready. Might be a little sooner because I'm selling my pipe collection off and its helping a lot.

Must be because I keep beating you to the good places in south Louisiana. Denham Springs Antique district used to be a good place to find decent estate pipes but that was before that big flood. That's where I found a Mauro Armellini Cavalier for $25. There is a big antique place in Pontchatoula, just below Hammond, that occasionally have so above average pipes. There prices are usually in the $30 - $35 range but they are usually to give as much as 10% off but that's it. The are more likely to have the run of the mill Kaywoodies and Grabows, but I did find my Ascorti there. I have seen some decent pipes in Breaux Bridge - I bought a 1950s Kirsten in one place - but I agree, most of what the have are priced way more than they are worth. For some reason, I've had better luck finding decent pipes to restore in Mississippi. My problem now is I need to sell off some of the estate pipes I have now so I can buy some more.

That never occurred to me. But, I struck up a conversation with an older couple who ran a shop, so I may stop by and ask them. It is amazing how pipes serve as a conversation starter. EVERYONE has a story about someone who smoked pipe, and the stories are almost always fond memories for them. The older couple and I talked about pipes for a while. The husband used to dig up things in New Orleans when he was a kid looking for treasures. He said they used to find a lot of clay pipes. A few cool stories. In this part of Louisiana, there were very few pipe smokers. It is primarily Cajun French culture, and pipes were apparently not big with them. However, my other grandfather - English heritage - in another part of the state smoked pipes constantly. Unfortunately, he was not the most loving sort. So, my next trip are to antique shops in that part of the state, where he grew up. The heritage of people in that part of the state come primarily from English stock. If you think of the classic Southern gentlemen sitting around smoking pipes, it's that culture.

Yeah, in another post, I mentioned heading to that part of the state - Denham Springs, St. Francisville, etc. There is zilch here in Lafayette. Growing up down here, I spent most of my time around my Cajun relatives, and no one smoked pipes. My other grandparents lived in Jackson, Louisiana, and almost all my grandfather's friends smoked pipes. It is spending time with them that first introduced me to the beauty of the smell of pipe smoke.

One of my sisters has traced the family back to the late 1700s to early 1800s. They at one time owned property stretching from Gibson north to Grosse Tete. We haven't been able to confirm the relationship between the person who Gibson is named for and the family though. We also have relatives who are buried on tribal Indian grounds. My understanding is that there were pipe smokers in that area but they mostly smoked clay or hardwood pipes. Neither material would probably last long. It does make me wonder whether they every made pipes from Cypress knees. I've seen some house with the knees polished to a high gloss as table decorations.
