Yeah, in another post, I mentioned heading to that part of the state - Denham Springs, St. Francisville, etc. There is zilch here in Lafayette. Growing up down here, I spent most of my time around my Cajun relatives, and no one smoked pipes. My other grandparents lived in Jackson, Louisiana, and almost all my grandfather's friends smoked pipes. It is spending time with them that first introduced me to the beauty of the smell of pipe smoke. My family on my father's side were from the other side of the Atchafalaya river. One of my sisters has traced the family back to the late 1700s to early 1800s. They at one time owned property stretching from Gibson north to Grosse Tete. We haven't been able to confirm the relationship between the person who Gibson is named for and the family though. We also have relatives who are buried on tribal Indian grounds. My understanding is that there were pipe smokers in that area but they mostly smoked clay or hardwood pipes. Neither material would probably last long. It does make me wonder whether they every made pipes from Cypress knees. I've seen some house with the knees polished to a high gloss as table decorations. Cool story! My last name is fairly common around here, and distant family members connected the family name connection all the way back to Nova Scotia, where a French woman married a British (originally Scottish) soldier. He stayed with her family with the French were kicked out, and they eventually made their way here with the larger emigration. I have an aunt who tied our family to the larger family name. So, we can trace the name all the way back to Nova Scotia.

Eh worth the extra time I spose I've been lucky before. I haven't seen but one other piper up here in the UP so luck is almost not necessarily a part of the equation.
