In what seems like another life time ago my wife and I lived in the Detroit area. It was just a short drive across a bridge to Canada.Windsor was the name of the city.We did a good bit of shopping there. We could buy up to $200 worth of stuff without paying duty on it.They had some really good cookies there that I couldn't get where I lived so I always stocked up.Now to the point of this post...The first time I walked into a smoke shop there I realized that pipe tobacco cost 3 times what it did in Detroit..Wouldn't It would be great if pipe tobacco was as cheap in other countries as it is in this country, and it could shipped across borders?...I hope this won't become political..I didn't intend for it to.

Tobacco is high here in places. When I went up to Massachusetts to work for a while I paid around $10 a pack. Was a big difference from down here in the south where they are generally under 5. But we would go to Vermont every other week and pick up cartons for $55.
Our prices are climbing, but other countries, and some states, have it worse.

Prices here are shocking. But since I only started this hobby when the prices were what they are I never have known a better time.
I do sometimes sob when I hear of the bargains to be had in the states though.

Josh, where you live the tobacco tax is 10%...here in Floriduh it is 85%...guess where you should do your buying?

It's bad. Anytime we head to the beach or down there to work, everyone grabs cigarettes before we hit the line (not me).

That’s one of the best things about living in NC...reasonable prices on cigars and tobacco’s. Absolutely the worst Country as far as cost and taxes on tobacco products is Australia. How would you like to pay the equivalent of $59.00 American dollars for a cheap 50 gram tin of tobacco!!

never a ciggie smoker, but is a Rez shop(s) 15mins away. Have been inside the store for small sales tax free sundries & have noticed native-made cartons for around $20. Most of the stores only carry native-made brands as the Feds always looking for a chance to confiscate the brand name item cause no tax stamp. In NY outside of NYC...xpect to pay near $10 a PACK!! Add about $1.50 per pack to the above. Gas....15 to 20 cents per gallon less than off rez stores
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY pipe/cigar since '62

I have to travel for work quite a bit and everytime I am in Europe I plan on picking up some hard to find (in the US) offerings (e.g. Hu, Germains, SG Plugs), and then I get sticker shock and spend my money on beer and wine instead.

I'm honestly not sure I would smoke at the price points many States and Countries charge... Definitely lucky to be in a relatively low tax area.
$59 for a 50g tin... Nope.

My local B&M's are expensive. He always has good stock though. If I want something uncommon I can get it from him but I gotta pay. I try to buy online 90% of the time for that reason.

The Cigar shop that our pipe club meets in is pretty reasonably priced...us pipe smokers are a gnat on the arse of the cigar sales, so we are pretty lucky in that regard.
I always wanted to travel to Australia, but for several reasons, Pipe tobacco demonzation being one of them, I will never spend my tourist dollars there.

For average Australians, that's more like $90 USD. (!!!) The exchange rates reflect overall trade amongst nations. You have to use PPP (purchasing power parity) rates to adjust consumer prices.

Blessed be that Tobacco doesn't cost a heinous amount in the states. If it did I would likely be 100% getting mine from growing my own plants

Well...If tobacco were more expensive here in the US as in other places, I probably would have been more selective when I began cellaring.
Take it easy. I’m NOT advocating anything here folks, simply musing this morning because I can.

The FDA promises to increase the prices here in the United States added to the taxes each state in our union demand, which varies. However I do not see pipe tobacco reaching the price point set in Australia or New Zealand at least not anytime soon.
