I remember my grand father just taking a pinch, loading and lighting in literally 5 - 10 seconds. Amazing really. I do not know what he tasted but he sure enjoyed his pipes.

If you worry about what others take away from the act of smoking a pipe, you'll lose much of the joy that comes from the learning...in time packing, lighting and just smoking will become second nature, and then the joy comes from the hunt for your "holy grail' blend, if that can be found.
With no internet ,many of our Fathers and Grandfathers took up the pipe because their friends, or a neighbor ,or indeed their own father smoked one; perhaps a pal told them the ladies would flock to them like bees to honey...
whatever the reason ,you can bet they didn't have the vast selection of leaf we have today, and i'm sure many settled on one or two OTC, blends and stuck with them for life, many with only one to three pipes.
My point is this...if you smoke one blend, in the same pipe and keep your pipe clean, in a short time you'll pick up on flavors that were hidden from you at first.
Back in the day ,it just came natural ; today, we might smoke three or more tobacco in one day.
I say, if you're new to pipes, get a cob and some good old Carter Hall ,and just let you fingers do what it takes to fill the pipe without so much thought...once you get the feel for this cut , move on to another , but the key is to relax and enjoy.
