Felt the need to clarify my views...
I still have enough Esoterica Penzance in my cellar to last the rest of my life, but I recently discovered that Arango Balkan Supreme "hits the same buttons" for me.
I do not consider Balkan Supreme as a replacement for Penzance.
Good Smokes, folks. As with any of my opinions, YMMV.

I think if you get PS English Oriental Supreme you might find it even closer (and better). I has some of the PZ Hwang Factor. I have smoked this right next to Balk Sup and prefer the PS. In fairness, I know a few people that like both equally.

peterd-Buffalo Spirit Though I admit the greatness of Penzance and have enjoyed that, which @10furlongs gifted, I have always been used to being happy with a little less than perfect. Xuan and I live in our first house, which was 50K. We have never thought of "moving on up", though we could use more space. If I had 3 pounds of PZ I would love every minute of it. In lieu of its absence, I love what works best, as you. Now you know why I follow your reviews and opinions so closely

Penzance to rule them but good luck to find it at all. Penzance to bind them but its cost will blind all. I think that was the quote from LOTR. I might be off a word or two.

I like Penzance. It's quite good but I won't procure anymore. I have a few bowls left in a jar from an open bag and a pound left in the cellar. G. L. Pease Quiet Nights works fine for me. The bowls of Plum Pudding Special Reserve I've enjoyed were in the same league as well. I have enough of both the latter two, among others, to last me to the next phase.

There will always be a special place in my heart for Penzance. I bought my first tin in 2011 from Barclay Rex, purely by chance. As much as I love it, I’ve discovered many other great English blends. WhiteKnight, BlackHouse, GLP Westminster , C&D Star of the East Flake and more recently, thanks to Dramatwist, Arango Balkan Supreme. |

OK, indulge me... Is there anything at least close to penzance that is available in the UK that I could try? Since they're made by Germain's on Jersey, try Special Latakia Flake. It's probably the closest but I think it has less Latakia and less topping (which is slight in Penzance, anyway, but I think is partly responsible for the "magic"). Their other Latakia blends are also worth trying, like King Charles and 1820 - but I think they're closer to Margate. Century is an interesting blend, and is a limited edition - a Latakia blend with wine and rum. |

Your best chance is finding Germain's Special Latakia Flake as Chico recommends 👍👍👍......shhhhhh don’t tell anyone.....I liked it better then Penzance! |

I've never had any of the blends in this thread since I'm just testing the waters of latakia, but in general every Eso blend I've had has been overhyped. There's nothing wrong with the ones I've had but I could easily replace each one with something else.

I normally don't gravitate towards heavy Lat/English/Balkan blends, save for the OCCASIONAL Quiet Nights, Gaslight, EMP, or Night Cap. I smoke those rarely. That said, I just got some Arango Balkan in this week. I've smoked it twice in a row. I don't know why, but I definitely like it. I'll probably smoke it again tonight (I'm a night time pipe smoker). |

Okay, I am not talking about Captain Black Grape, but one reason to plan ahead being what is the next Penzance? No one expected McC closing, save those a little more clued in. If Balkan Supreme or English Oriental Supreme is your choice, they're cheap and cellar it, me buckos. Thanks to both of these tobaccos I understand the diff between English and Balkan, not that I can explain, but I know what I like more by taste. It's English for me. I know encouraging cellaring is obvious, but I would not plan on seeing reasonably priced Eso or Germain in the future. Wolfman is right in his assessment of GLP blends, and they (at least) sell many of their product in 8 ounce tins. So, bulk or larger tins are the blends I choose to make my best buddies out of. I buy pouches and small tins for speculation and like adding seasoning to a sausage. |

As much as I love Penzance and some of the other named blends, I’m focusing on buying bulk. Arango Balkan Supreme is a bargain at approximately $40/pound in comparison to the non-bulk English blends by GLP, Hearth and Home and Penzance (if you’re lucky to find it at retail prices). A pound will run close to $80. The Sutliff bulk pricing is even less.

Sam ^^^^^^^^^^^ stockpile Sutliff ERR Match.......excellent bulk Match, especially with some aging!! The FDS....OOOOOOOPS....SORRY....FDA can make the blend disappear any time. It’s an underpriced bulk blend👍👍
