Let's say that you have one pipe.A cheap basket pipe. You're smoking a mild Aromatic and it's smoking OK.Now you switch to a much heavier blend.Maybe a Virginia blend..Now a question..Do you suppose that heavy blend will smoke as well in that basket pipe as the Aromatic did?..I subscribe to the theory that it won't and the quality of the pipe you need is related to the blend you smoke in it..Of course I could be wrong..What say you?... All of you cob smokers don't jump on me at once.

I'm thinking not, but what if it was the other way around? Would the aromatic taste better straight after the heavy blend?

All of you cob smokers don't jump on me at once. First off I would smoke a few bowls of a Burley forward non-aromatic blend to reduce the ghost of the aromatics. Then I would try your Virginia blend. It might smoke better depending on how you define the aromatic smoked Ok. Me. Personally I would do an alcohol treatment and completely clean the pipe. And start from fresh. Jmo

I smoke nearly every blend in every pipe I own. I usually decide what tobacco I want to smoke and what pipe I want to smoke independently of each other. Cross flavors can be pretty cool. A little hint of lakeland in a straight VA. Some perique tingle in a burley etc. It's all good.
Except for deer tongue! I have one old Kaywoodie that happened to be the first pipe I smoked Gentleman Caller in and it was never the same again. All DT blends go in that pipe, and that pipe alone.

I can't find any reliable correlation between pipe shape and tobacco genre and taste. I just throw darts until I find a combination that works.

I just realised I completely missed the point of the question.
I'm not sure. I've got some pipes that smoke everything great, and some that smoke everything not so great.

Been doing it this way for over 40+ years of smoking. I don't smoke any Aro's though.

If you like both blends equally I don’t believe you notice much difference.

I struggled with the wording of this post.I hope I can explain a bit better what my point was..In the old days at least here in the south. Most pipe smokers had 1 or 2 cheap pipes. They usually smoked over the counter Burley blends in them.Today we have all these more complex stronger blends..If a cob or a Grabow will smoke today's heavy blends why do we spend hundreds of dollars on a pipe?

Same reason we spend way more than needed on cars or anything else ... ego, art appreciation, peer pressure, etc.

Using the famous WAG method, it's approximately 65% tobacco, 25% method and 10% pipe IMHO. Those after the holy grail will value the final 10% more than others which I greatly respect but do not personally practice.

I think I would agree with the two posts above, but could it also be that pipe 'technology' has moved on, and so pipe makers know how to get the best out of a block of briar?

I'm with pepesdad1 , I'm lost no matter how many times I read that. I still got lost after the third word. Smoke what you are smoking in one pipe, then load it up with a different tobacco and smoke that, then load a second pipe with even more tobacco...smoke it. Confused? Yeah, me too. Just smoke the damn thing and stop getting all hairy about it (enter Ted and Paddy's obsession...can't do emoticons or I'd put a laughing one there) . It is just a pipe and it is just tobacco...don't need to make rocket science out of any of it. Now everyone can jump on this old man...cause I don't care. Have fun...that is the key statement.

I would adjust your numbers to 50 25 25, just because a bad hunk of briar will destroy any smoke until its built some layer of cake. I had a pipe that never smoked right and I'm sure it was caused by a bad block. I could smoke my favorite blend in it and hate it. I dont have it anymore and I'm still leary of the whole country it came from because of it.

I smoked whatever in whatever. I only have one pipe that I devote to a specific blend. I do that because it's my favorite aromatic and I just want to taste that blend. I haven't noticed any of my cheaper pipes smoking worse when I put different blends in though. I stuff and smoke

I stuff and smoke I have known men that smoked pipes for more than fifty years and never learned this common sense lesson. However I have to state that I don’t believe there’s a pipe that was ever made that smokes as well as the old Comoy’s or Edward’s. Did I just contradict myself? AJ

Of course, now the seconds are going for $30 and $40 -- Guildhall, Everyman, etc. I don't know quite what to make of that.

I agree with Professor Steve... don't give a rat's a** about "ghosting"... Penzance or anything else tastes just as good to me in my cheapest cob or my most expensive hand made pipe.
