...sometimes, I'll just open up a tin or a jar and let it sit on the end table next to me... I can smell the tobacco and I suppose it's akin to "potpourri"...

I've never noticed aroma while smoking. I know that smelling is a large part of tasting, so perhaps that aroma is part of the taste? Or do we confuse the two while smoking?
I rarely smoke with others, but when I do, I swear their pipes smell better!

Back when I smoked 759 all my wives thought it smelled like "burning garbage" and to me it smelled like a pine forest, nice and woodsy to me. My McC's red va's have always smelled a nice deep sweet and other va's have citrisy aroma to me. Since I don't smoke around other non smokers anymore (even when over at cig smokers houses) as most find the smoke from a pipe rather heavy and for most in my experience don't appreciate it.

I remember when you could smoke a pipe on an airplane, smelled good. I remember that too. Now I would feel weird seeing someone smoke in a bar in Ireland (it's banned now, of course). Just over 10 years ago it would have been weird NOT seeing someone smoke in a bar. The smell wasn't the same as the pipe smoke though.

I always thought it peculiar that smoking in bars and casinos was banned many places. My observation was that most people frequenting bars smoked. Also casinos. One time quite a few years ago I was playing blackjack in a casino and the dealer complained to the pit boss that "all this smoke is bothering me." The pit boss said, "hold your breath."

I suppose, perhaps years ago smoking and drinking were almost synonymous, in that if you drank alcohol you also smoked. As the time went on, I noticed less people smoking in bars, and I understand why the ban came into place - so that people who didn't smoke were allowed the freedom to enjoy a few pints in a smoke-less atmosphere. I also, don't understand why there couldn't be smokeless-less bars - i.e. bars dedicated to smokers, so that people are under no illusion that smoking will take place in this venue and can therefore choose either to enter or go to a smokeless bar. It kinda limits the 'freedom of people who want to smoke from doing so while enjoying a drink in the company of other smokers.
