Let me clarify...
So when I smoke, I can smell the smoke and it smells great...BUT...
When I am in the presence of someone ELSE who is smoking a pipe (let's say it's the same blend), the smoke smells SO MUCH better. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?
If it DOES happen to others, any idea why that is?

I wish I could offer you an explanation but I would only be guessing. I experience this as well.
I am always asking my wife and daughters how a blend smells when I try it for the first time and the answers I get don't always make sense. They say McClelland 2020 smells "pretty good" but Mississippi River bothers them a little bit, and they have similar components. I was also told that Dreams of Kadath just smells like cigarettes even though it's got a huge range of flavors.
Room notes are tricky.

I'm glad you can smell the essence of what's in your pipe. It must be nice to be able to do so.
For the most part I am not able to smell. All I get is the bland smell of smoke. The same is true with food don't smell much there

Paddy, when you smell the smoke from your own smoking it is altered by what you taste. The room note from anothers smoking is a purer aroma. That coupled with being jealous that they are smoking and your not,,,,you know, grass is greener on the other side thing.Desire to light up with them....

Half the enjoyment of pipe smoking is the aroma it smells nice for sure, subtle sweetness like some sweet confectionary delight, even otcs have a nice aroma to them, smoking with a sweet like coffee with cremer can enhance the experience.

I can see the difference. I wish it was nicer for me as a first person smoker rather than a third person smoker.

Yep, noticed that for years. When i'm smoking in a smaller room it's nice when I leave it, then come back to the aroma.

This is a minor bit off topic but related if indirectly. My wife and I both enjoy pipes and cigars, she tends to pick a blend or cigar and that's her smoke. While we were at the chicago show this year wandering the smoking tent on friday at the preshowshow I kept looking around for anyone smoking a pipe near enough I'd catch wind of it and there wasnt anyone. We would go from table to table and I'm looking for a smoker close enough to waft smoke at me steong enough I'd smell it. This went on for almost 45 minutes, and I'm getting frustrated cuz this mug is following me and I cant pick him out of a crowd aside from the room note of his tobacco. Wife and I stop to talk to some friends and I walk through her smoke.. it was her the whole damn time. So Arrowhead pipe club mixture is the tobacco that smells like pipe tobacco should to me. I don't know why but its what my brain says pipe smoke smells like. I enjoy the room note more than the smoke because of my thoughts on its scent. Now that theres a memory associated with that smoke I'll remember that moment whenever she smokes it.

haven't been around someone smoking when I'm not. Never asked my roommates if it smells good either. I'll smoke a bowl later and ask my roommates what it smells like.

It's the curse of the pipe smoker - the pipe brings us pleasure and we bring pleasure to others, but we can't have our cake and eat it too.

I am in the camp that actually finds more pleasure in the smoking portion than the room note- at least with the blends I smoke. I was out in the country for a few days and got to smoke inside as a result. Walked out and back in, was stunned at how different it was from what I experienced. Not bad really, just... very very different.

I'm glad others are experiencing this too. It baffles me as to why we can't smell what others are smelling if we're the ones smoking. Just one of those things that we may never fully understand. I'm ok with that.

Legend.... One of the biggest disappointments that I ever experienced was facing the reality that pipe smoke from some other guy's pipe smelled way better than the smoke coming from MY own pipe....and my smoke smelled, and tasted nothing like the cherries, chocolate, honey, walnuts, figs, stone fruit, baked bread, camp fire, etc.......yada, yada, yada, I feel your pain. When I was 16 years old, when I first started, Mixture No.79, Cherry Blend, Rum and Maple, etc, always disappointed, and always smelled better when someone else was doing the smoking. Now, I learned to deal with it. But I still like smelling smoke from someone else's pipe, better. I think once the smoke from your own tobacco runs past your taste buds, and into your nose/throat, your sense-of-smell gets screwed up.

I once asked this forum?.....if it was possible to burn your favorite pipe blend(s)...without actually smoking them yourself and thus destroying the pure joy of the blend's aroma? It was suggested that I sprinkle some of my favorite tobacco over a small, pure charcoal, block. I found some of these charcoal "pills" in stores where they sell incense, aromatic oils, etc. It works. Just light up a charcoal block and stick it in an ashtray, wait for it to get ashy, and sprinkle your favorite tobacco onto the smoldering charcoal. Done! It perfumes the room with that special fragrance from your own tobacco blend, and....the best part..... you get to be totally passive. Just sit down, listen to some music, eat, read a book, and sniff away.

Sprinkled a pinch of a tobacco I didn't care for on the coals and it smelled fantastic.

That's an amazing idea! How many aros do people have hanging around that they bought for the room note to make other people comfortable while they smoke but they don't care for the taste? I like aros and even I have a couple. Just turn that mess into incense!

I like aros and even I have a couple. Just turn that mess into incense! Repackage it and you could make a fortune. I don't see the fda on the heels of insence manufacturers (although, to be fair, I didn't check).

I know that when I sing along to Eric Burden on The house of the rising sun, I nail it, perfect pitch. Not sure about other’s perception. I hear you Paddy, I am pretty much where you are at.

Normally I'm a freak on my own.

Wife is allergic to smoke, hence I smoke by myself on the porch or in the A/C'd shed. Bummer! Never get to smell what I am smoking, unless I go out of the room and then come back in. Since it is hot outside, I don't do that too often.
Didn't add one thing to this thread, except words.

I also find this happens to me , the smell of pipe tobacco is elegant not harsh where as cigarette smell is a complete turn off to be around.
