Serena Williams is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, male or female. In my book, she certainly is. As far as I am concerned, Serena is the GOAT. We can argue about her attitude, or her sportsmanship, but she is still the GOAT.   GOAT......Greatest of all time.....not in my books, Martina Navratilova would have put Serena @ second place in her prime. Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would be no match for Serena Williams....JMHO. Only reason I matched Serena against two male tennis players is because of your statement “ Serena Williams is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, male or female “. In their prime both Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova would definitely have been close matches with Serena. Martina had a much stronger backhand. If my memory serves me correctly Margaret Court won the most Grand Slams. Bobby Riggs would’ve taken them all in his prime. |

This is why I like hockey....them guys know how to blow off steam.  Going off the rails and claiming that she is somehow a champion for women is pretty lame. Boo freakin goo Serena.... I will cry in my beer tonight for you. |

I admire The Williams sisters for what they have accomplished, especially considering where they came from. She probably has demons that most of us could never understand. Let's cut her some slack and end this.

The part of sports that should be stressed is sportsmanship. As a professional they should at all times act professional and display good sportsmanship. She broke the rules three times and it cost her. Illegal coaching from the stands, arguing with a referee and having a chimpout like a three year old destroying her racket. Well that and more steroids in her than a pro wrestler or Lance Armstrong.

If you are gifted enough to excel in sports and make money beyond the wildest dreams of the rest of the populace, you should be have a humility and a thankfulness for being sling-shotted into the one percent for playing a game.
I respect athletes like Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, Larry Fitzgerald, Pat Tillman...etc...some of the others, not so much.

Gifted is right on. Allot of people don't know how brutally competitive Tennis is or then think it's just a matter of practive when literally 1% might make it even with starting in your early teens, classes, camp, coaches. The average viewer has no idea how hard it is. I've met lots of people who seem to think it's a "weak" sport .. the average person thinks Football requires more athletisism and skill.

Sorry for the late entry on this topic. I do understand Serena's position, since many others (more men than women) have gotten away with badgering the ump. But, calling Ramos out as a thief was uncalled for, he straight-up followed guidelines. It's unfortunate how this overshadowed Osaka's win...which of course she'd have had regardless of the points rightly awarded by Ramos - this was hers. Apologizing during the ceremony showed lots of character, but was also very sad given her well-earned accomplishment. Naomi handled all of this amazingly well, particularly being a 20 year old kid.
