The graphics on that are amazing. The gameplay looks fluid and immersive. It's definitely a giant leap from pong.
But I often find some of the simple games have better longevity.

Battlefield has always been my favorite series. All the way back to 1942 on the PC. Those 64 player rounds were so hectic, I loved it.

Agreed. I loved it when I got lucky enough to have a squad that actually communicated and worked together. Could really rack up points and attack/defend objectives. Battlefield was more rewarding for group playstyle than others like CoD. Dont get me wrong though, CoD WAS a great game. The jetpacks and everything ruined it for me.
Was always good with tanks too. Theres nothing quite like shooting down a plane or helicopter with 1 tank round.
Strange for me, grew up with Atari when I was young and now everything is close to real.

The original Pong was installed on Magnavox TV’s in the late 60’s to the mid 70’s. If you kept the brightness level to high you could burn a line horizontally in the phosphor dead center of the CRT. Was a pretty cool game to play. Had different speeds and skill levels.

Now that my son is a little older I am rediscovering how much fun gaming can be. Every so often I would pick up a PC game like Portal or Braid and play through it, but playing together with my son is a whole new world. I can't keep up with him in Star Wars Battlefront II. His mother was so pissed when installed Fortnite on the Xbox, it was a bit chilly in the bedroom for a few weeks. Oh well sometimes you have to take one for the team.

Gaming will only get more advanced. In ten year virtual reality will be good enough that it will be a fairly common household item. At least a common item for households that have interests in gaming, and/or has kids. I have some VR in my house and it's pretty sweet. Once movement becomes more fluid VR will really pick up

Once movement becomes more fluid VR will really pick up I wonder if it's the lack of fluidity that makes some people feel sick when they play video games - like me, especially with POV games. On the rare occasion I play a game it's a walk-through puzzle mystery type thing.

On the rare occasion I play a game it's a walk-through puzzle mystery type thing. It's a problem with the movement and the framerate. Mostly the framerate. I've played games with clunky movement and felt a little sick, but after 5 minutes my brain adjusts. If the framerate is horrible I can not handle it, overwhelming sickness. I've watched some VR videos on youtube that have made me sick because of their framerate.

My sons 6 years old computer couldn't be upgraded anymore, even with 16 gigs of ram and a 500 watt power supply to drive his video card. Off went his order to Dell. With the new one, you usually can't tell the CG from live action. I spent most of the last 30 years in front of a computer monitor, so, no games for me.

The cgi animated cutscenes in games are so stunning. Almost real. If you want to see some amazing graphics coming out in a year, check on the trailer for the game The Last of Us 2. It is insane how good they are and how realistic the movement looks. It really does look like real people.

The Atari 2600 gave me all the video game graphics and excitement I'll ever need. But, I wholly understand the fixation people have with modern video games. Great graphics and mind-blowing challenges at a relatively low cost (for what you get). Heck yeah, why not?

… you all are to be blessed...I hate games and gaming systems...X-Box's were the worst purchase mistake I ever made... Of course they were. You should have bought a Playstation (console wars are pretty much a thing of the past now) Its always funny how tastes tend to set in as you age. Games that I grew up with, or are made in that style, interest me a great deal more than most modern AAA titles. Although there are always some exceptions. Gaming has really started to come into its own as a story telling medium.

I was just making a joke about the biggest competitor for the Xbox, what was once referred to as a console war where one gaming platform had games the other did not and the hardware could be drastically different, it sparked much debate in between classes during pretty much my entire schooling. Gaming is a pretty fun hobby if you are into it, but it can sometime consume a young persons life (all things in moderation). I'm sure there were times my parents wished they hadn't purchased the latest Nintendo system, but I turned out OKish!

I too was never a gamer, I definitely don’t believe our young children today spend enough time outdoors! Would you want your child playing “ Grand Theft Auto “?? Extremely violent for minors! If your a gamer ya’ll understand why this game should be “ X “ rated!!!

If your a gamer ya’ll understand why this game should be “ X “ rated!!! You are definitely right about the kids, so is Peter. I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time doing plenty of outdoor activities as well, camping, hiking, fishing, shooting etc. Games were just another thing I did/do. This was also before the addition of online multiplayer for the most part. Today's games are more competitive and time consuming, or at least that's how it seems to me. Grand Theft Auto is rated M for Mature, the gaming equivalent of being rated R (wish this was universal so more parents had a better basis for comparison). The reasons for it are listed much like a movie would be too. (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol.) No child should be playing that game. Stores cannot legally sell it to anyone under 17. But in todays world a youngun can hop on Steam and say they are 18 and purchase away. I have next to zero interest in that game, but I guess I can see why its popular.

You wrote......... “ Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol.) No child should be playing that game “. I agree, especially when you pick up a hooker, pay her $60.00 for sex, then take your gun and blow her brains out, take your $60.00 back and dump her dead body out of the car. That’s an extremely violent game!! Now think of the society we ALL live with today, including road rage.....don’t you believe that’s attributed to the MANY violent games on the market today......I do!! I’m not going to get into the many school shootings in the past decade. These acts of violence and aggression did not exist when I was an adolescent or into my 40’s.....I think you get my point of view....I need to go no further.

You could look at it as an opportunity to bond with the boys. You play with them for an hour, they they do something outside with you for an equal amount of time.

In Ireland, chances of getting outside much (at least in the sunshine) is slim, because there is little sun here.
When it's good we go outside. When the weather is bad, we also go 'out' but to indoor play areas, swimming pools etc.
However, what I've found with my girls is that we can bond, solve puzzles, be creative, role-play within the games we play. We play Minecraft a lot. We mine together, build communities, houses, we role-play, we have build battles with each other and create different sculptures etc. It's a great way to be creative and use your imagination WITHIN the gaming world, all in a dry house.
They also like Roblox, which is an online gaming platform where users can create games etc. It's child friendly and there are thousands of games that can be played without the worry of mature themes etc.
They aren't ALL bad, but I get the point that Peter and others are making - like anything else, it can get out of hand and consume your life.
Everything in moderation.
