After years of struggle, I am finally getting an oxygen concentrator for night time use. This has been a long road studded with indifference and bureaucracy. I stop breathing at night and my disolved O2 drops into the low to mid 80s. Too many times I wake close to death. I know becuase I am cold in a hot room under blankets. My old heart is hardly beating. Supplemental oxygen could help make what breathing I am doing more efficient. I probably need one of the CPAP machines but that is another very difficult process. Hopefully, this concentrator will improve my situation and I can actually sleep at night. Now if I can just get the cat to stop scratching on the window, the geese to STF up and the dog to stop barking when a leaf falls, I might get throught the night!!!!!
I have been working on this for a long time and had to share my success. Thanks for reading!

I'm glad the people involved in your health care did the right thing. I'm sure the o2 will make a vast difference and also take away some of the associated fear that I would assume you have when you anticipate sleep.

I hope it works for you. Do you think high altitude is a factor? There's less oxygen at almost 7,000 feet!

At 7,778 feet elevation, the reduced oxygen makes breathing less efficient particularly at night. I have developed tachycardia or fast heartbeat to make up for the low oxygen. This is not good as the heart is only good for so many beats and we want to stretch that waaayyy out. I see how my old carburated Land Cruiser struggles while climbing grades. I am not much better!

I wish you the best of luck with the oxygen concentrator. I've been fitted with a dental appliance (thankfully I have GREAT insurance) that has helped tremendously. But I'm also not dealing with the 80% oxygen levels of that high altitude.

80% is a hell of a dip. Very glad you're getting the help you need to combat that.

Wow - even higher than I thought. I'm at around 1,000 lower and I feel the effects. Nothing like what you're dealing with, but since moving here I get far more migraines and other minor health complaints than I ever did at sea level. Hope the concentrator makes a big improvement for you.

This might sound like blaspheme on a Pipe Forum but, ever think of stopping smoking?

It's a fair question, rdpipes. Is there a link between pipe smoking and sleep apnea?

It's a fair question, rdpipes . Is there a link between pipe smoking and sleep apnea? I don't know. But lets face it smoking isn't the most healthy thing we do with or lives. I asked because I didn't know whether it would have a difference or not.

It might do. I don't know either. And I get your point, smoking isn't the healthiest option available. I wonder if it would be a catch 22 situation for some people. I get the impression here that, for some, the pipe is one of the things that keeps them going.

That is interesting. Like most articles like this, the comparator is cigarette smoke.

Definitely ^^^^^^^^ helps keeping my sanity and somewhat lower my stress level. Gives me time to sit back and contemplate about my past and life in general.

I hope your O2 concentrator works well for you, but don’t rule out a CPAP machine. I don’t know if they can be used together, but I’ve had a CPAP for about two years and it has changed my life. It is a pain to get one, I had to do two overnight studies wired up like a chimp in a spacesuit. However, my sister was able to get one by doing her study at home. They sent her a diagnostic machine that reported data via cellular and the doctor was able to prescribe her a machine. Much less hassle, and if you live in a remote area (7700 feet elevation sounds remote to me!) it may be an option.

I hope all works out and it should! C PAP &BIPAP machines both can be used with supplemental O2 if that is needed as well!
