Hope all are OK. Folks in the path please check in so we know you are OK. Just trying out new tablet. Us old folks have trouble with new stuff. Thanks Walt, but can only check in when I have power. I won’t use my cell phone except for emergencies.

Ted, check your phones settings, it may have an ultra power saving mode. Mine turns my mobile data off unless you turn it back on, shuts down most apps in the background, texts and phone calls, puts the screen in greyscale and cuts back on ram and processor usage. Makes my battery last 4 days for emergencies, it's worth checking!

We keep getting updates here at work , seems like storm is stronger than originally anticipated. Also read a story how FEMA uses waffle houses to check on how bad the storms hit areas , depending on if they limit their menu or close early or are closed, shows how bad some areas are affected.

That ^^^^^^^^ was on the news here this morning. Gave me a good laugh, our Government uses Waffle House to update local weather reports. Seems better then our radar system that keeps changing reports every hour!?!?!?

An an aside, 300 millions dollars is a lot to lose - but that's also a substantial amount that the farmers get for tobacco - and that's only those affected by the storm. The tobacco industry isn't dead yet. I saw a few videos yesterday of storm surges coming around beach houses. I wouldn't like to be living in a beach house when the storm hits. I hope our own P-uffy is safe and secure, or even out of the way of the storm. Thoughts and prayers with the lot of you. We have a problem in the US that you can get government subsidized flood insurance even if you build a house that is guaranteed to be wiped out every 20 years. People build homes on Bolivar Penensula, which is nothing but a sand bar. And they get sympathy every time they are wiped out. As an aside, we are flooding in Houston again today, but no big deal. At least we don't have mountains to concentrate and accelerate the flood waters. Very worried about the Asheville area. Matthew 7:24-27

I experienced 80-100MPH winds directly on the beach. It was kind kinda fun, actually. I responded to 8 maybe 10 hurricanes during my Coast Guard career. I would not consider any of them fun. But that’s just me.

Actually didn't include a couple of bad storms we went through while I was stationed on an icebreaker. Coming back north from Antartica we hit a bad storm and took a number of rolls that were more than 50 degrees. The biggest was a 63-degree roll. People were flying out of their bunks and we had green water coming down the stacks and into the engineroom. It extinguished one boiler if I remember correctly. The icebreaker was 265 feet long and had a rounded bottom so we could ride up on the ice. The engineering officer told us the icebreaker was designed to take up to an 87 degree roll and come back up. On one trip in the Arctic we were in a storm where we had 5-foot (yes, five foot) rollers coming at us. We were in the ice 45 miles from open water and the storm. A few days later, as we really hit that storm, the bow dipped down and a 3 ton chunk of ice came across the deck and ripped off one of the forward hatches.

I obviously have lived a very sheltered life.

USCG ships are not all that big and round bottom ice-breakers are notorious for rolling. Glad you made it home!

Heavy flooding on the coastline and low-lying areas have been seriously effected by Florence. I lost power twice so far, both times restored on average of 45 minutes....not bad at all so far where I am right now....thank God.

I used to attend my Ex-Wife's family reunions there back in the late '80s and early '90s. I hate to think anything happening to Big Nell's Pit Stop. Decent barbeque.
