Pipes give me nothing also. The only time I've really felt something is when I smoked a bowl of 1792. That stuff kicked. For me it takes a good amount of nasal snuff or cigs to give me a buzz.

Try a Padron 1964 Diplomatico on top of the bogie next time. I can never bring myself to actually cash in on any curiosity for cigars. I've never liked the smell and they're crazy expensive. Otherwise I might take you up on that!

...all due respect, but I think the concept of the "nicotine hit" is bogus... unless you're inhaling your pipe-smoke...

I get a nicotine buzz sometimes, mostly just dizzyness if I get up too fast after smoking something strong. Doesn't really bother me, kind of feels good and doesn't last but a minute or 2. I don't smoke enough to build up a tolerance.

Otherwise I might take you up on that! You wouldn't like the taste if you don't like the smell, so your instincts to keep away from them are probably right. You can get good values cigars, but for the most part they're not worth the money IMHO - especially at B&M prices.

I never inhale but that didn't stop me from getting really sick to the point of throwing up from smoking one of the aforementioned Padrons.... Never happened with pipes, though I've have definitely felt the effects of a few strong blends. My experience with the Padron taught me when to slow down or stop, though.

I never inhale the smoke from my pipes so, unless I'm an alien, I don't understand why anyone would get a "buzz" or a "rush" from smoking a pipe... I've smoked more different types of tobaccos than most of you could name... never had a "nic-hit." My opinion. YMMV.

It's pretty common with cigar smokers - seems like most guys on cigar forums have a gross story to tell! I'm sure a lot has to with body chemistry and weight, whether you've eaten beforehand, and how often a person smokes. I guess we all inhale small amounts while smoking, but I think it's more a case of the nicotine being absorbed through the mouth tissues.

Chico... that is a thoughtful comment, but I seriously doubt one could absorb enough nicotine via mouth tissue that would qualify as a "nic-hit." I have used the term "nic-hit" in "parlance", but I have never had the experience of being "dizzy" or "sick" from smoking a pipe. If anyone has any hard data, I'd like to see it. Everything stated previously is anecdotal.

I'm exactly the same as Dramatwist. However, my sister bought her husband a pipe 2 years ago and some mellow Virginia. He couldn't keep it lit so puffed like a train. After he said he felt so sick and had to lie down for a while. Never happened to me and I'm glad. I never feel any buzz of any sort.

Not only is the nicotine absorbed throught the mucous membranes of the mouth, but also the swallowed saliva and inhaled nasal sidestream. In combination, one can get enough nic to have a reaction. A used pipe filter offers evidence of much that goes unseen, left behind, and up in smoke... much more than meets the eye enters our system. It's not just nicotine that brings on nausea, but other noxious constituents brought about through the combustion process. Chewing tobacco will do a number on you too, sans the combustion.

During my 50 years of smoking everything from "funny little green Egyptian ciggaretes" at the University of Vietnam, through ciggaretes thru cigars and pipes, I can't say as I've encountered what some call a "nic hit" ! And after smoking Royal Yacht for 30 years I'm still wondering where folks got the idea it had a "nic hit"

Everything stated previously is anecdotal. I googled phrases like "nicotine absorption through mouth tissues" and came up with tons of stuff - including scientific studies comparing cigarettes to cigars. Apparently nicotine in cigars is more alkaline and therefore more readily absorbed by the mouth, whereas cigarettes act mainly when drawn into the lungs. Unfortunately none of the articles I saw (i.e., cursorily glanced at abstracts) mention any differences between effects of nicotine when absorbed through mouth or lung tissues, and didn't discuss pipes.... Various health websites don't make a distinction when talking about "nicotine sickness" and it seems that the "buzz" is one of the attractions of smokeless oral tobacco (I never felt much when taking snuff, other than a general sense of well-being). Interestingly, vaping doesn't deliver nicotine via the lungs, but through the mouth, nose and throat tissues - even though vapers inhale it. Anyway, thanks, Martin - this is exactly the kind of thing that gets my procrastination juices flowing...!

Smoking a cigar works the same as chewing tobacco its absorbed through the mouth and via ingestion of nicotine in the saliva. Cigar sweats and a rumbly tummy are often associated with pipe and cigar smoking. I experience either or both when I smoke too much in a short period mostly with cigars or the stronger blends. You don't have to inhale something to be effected by its smoke.

To be fair it probably had more to do with the cigarettes than the pipe. I've smoked everything from royal yacht to dark birds eye and haven't ever felt the effects of nicotine through a pipe alone. It's hard to judge nicotine content alone because of this, so it is a part of reviews that goes largely ignored by me. However, I never understood how royal yacht was supposed to be a strong tobacco. It's always seemed very mild to me.
I did roll some cigarettes with dark birds eye and those were some of the most fantastic cigarettes I've ever had. Even smoked in cigarettes it didn't give me any kind of buzz or anything.
Maybe it was how fast I smoked the brown bogie today? Don't know.

When I was about 14, us little a-holes when around pumpkin smashing at Halloween time (I know, I know. I'd give MYSELF a whoopin' these days). Someone brought a pack of Marlboro Light Menthols. I must've smoked 5 in about an hour. Got so nic sick I puked on the street outside my neighbor's house. That was the LAST time I had such a head rush from tobacco.
I feel it with pipes, but only after several in a row, and usually one of those bowls is something pretty heavy - SG Black XX rope, my Five Brothers mix, anything with over 25% Perique.
