Hey, Guys and Gals, I didn't intend to negate your experience of a "nic-hit." If you felt like that when smoking a pipe, I respect your experience. I've just never had the sensation, have never seen verifiable info on it, and I tend to have a jaundiced outlook on much of the accepted lore about pipe smoking. Carry on.

I also believe that 99% of humans who claim to have gluten problems are full of s***. It's all about attempting to get attention.

I am pretty nic tolerant, I don't inhale Makla Africaine, but it has a pretty good kick... mrsnuff.com/makla-m-60.htmlEven more so, Chimo El toro: www.chimo.com.ve/That is a junk kicker...you are spitting out motor oil, and you are hitting the red line on the tach.
I don't inhale cigars either, but I have had plenty that have sent me reeling, and had to let the cigar rest, never to be revisited.

I have a hunch ... sometimes there can be a pocket of nic in a blend .. I've had a couple times where I only took a few hits and came on super strong or it made me sick ..

Had some Capt. Earles stimulus that really messed me up. The nic in that blend is very high. I would only use little bowls.

Took me two cigarettes and pounding a bowl of brown bogie but I'm pretty sure I felt *something*.. To get a real feel of what nicotine is like just try a Swedish General Snus original. Does it for me every time, even though I am just about a chain smoker, with my pipes.

The nic-hit does exist. I had cigars from the magic isle in my younger days, that gave me the sweats, made my head spin and ultimately vomit. I suspect that it was probably on an empty stomach, but nevertheless, not fun.

Pipes give me nothing also. The only time I've really felt something is when I smoked a bowl of 1792. That stuff kicked. For me it takes a good amount of nasal snuff or cigs to give me a buzz.
1792 is horrific ...

I am wondering if once in a blue moon you get freak leaf that deposits a vein of pure nicotine and you end up being the one who puffs it.
I had this happen twice with the same tin, Captain Earle's Stimulus Package. Had to take to bed. Almost got sick. Not fun.

I can see why you might think that. I thought this at first and my brothers friend who manages a resturant complains about this because he must deal with this all day (as the manager he should be offering Gluten free but instead he would rather complain).
have my own story and have studied this and experimented on myself but I have nobody really to talk to about it. But since you brought it up ..
It's not Gluten. It's Monsanto.
It's hybridization and chemically engineered round up pesticide they are using on the wheat. That is why it's happening anywhere Monstanto or it's American division do business.
I have proven this by eating Einkhorn wheat which is loaded with Gluten - and nothing happens. Also drank beer from the 1990's called Kalik - nothing happened. Drink beer from 2018 - breakouts on face. Drink Beer from Russia - nothing happens. Ate some bread from Novosibirsk Russia tasted amazing - nothing happened. Ate bread from here in USA - broke out all over face.
I am 100% convinced this is the reason now. Hybridization + chemically engineered round up. Or they are doing something else to the food to increase yeilds they aren't telling people about. Also if you look at a chart of people who say they suffer from gluten intolerance - you will see a huge spike. They are also getting spikes in peanuts and soybeans which also use Monstano/GMO/Hybridization and chemically engineered Round up. Yet for some reason it has not effected corn to give corn intolerance. Maybe it's something in other crops that make then interact different.
I an not sure but in Eastern Europe the stores have been hit with cheaper US and EU wheat - and they are seeing a huge spike in Gluten intolerance and skin conditions like acne and Cysts which were rare over there before.

I didn't smoke anything but a very infrequent cigar (special event when somebody handed them out) at the time, but my father smoked pipes and cigars since I was born and up until that time I thought I was immune to nicotine. Not so. I'd wager that if you took someone who never smoked, and didn't live with a smoker, and had them smoke a large, strong cigar on an empty stomach, they'd get sick. I'd expect the same result from a large pipe (Group 5) of strong pipe tobacco as well. I think a lot of people would get sick on a lot less too. I'm actually really surprised that anyone here would suggest otherwise.

My friends... I offer my apologies if any of you were offended by my comments regarding "nic-hit" or "gluten allergies."
As with any free and open discussion, I come at it based on my own experience and I acknowledge your experiences as well.
While my beliefs have not changed overnight, I am truly sorry if I have offended any one of you.

Everyone experiences things differently.

I would have thought the nicotine content would be pretty uniform among the leaves. Not at all ... the nicotine increases as you go from bottom to top leaves. There's a lot more I could expound upon regarding this topic but the info is out there for those that want the truth. Needless to say, the nicotine delivery from a pipe is more than sufficient to cause a physiological reaction.

But after shreding are the leaves not uniformly mixed so that people aren't getting all leaf tops or all leaf buttoms?

During processing I'm assuming the leaves are separated into different pieces and used for separate purposes based on the characteristics of the pieces. I just saw one of those blends recently, I'll try and find it.

I don't think anyone took it that way at all - just a discussion of peoples' different experiences which is always interesting. I also worry that my posts might be taken the wrong way, because they sometimes are! So I know how you feel. But I would like to propose an experiment with you as the subject: simultaneously smoke a gigantic pipe full of Cotton Boll and a La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero cigar, while also taking copious amounts of White Elephant snuff, and with a wad of Thunder Snus lodged between you lip and gum. If you still felt no buzz, you would deserve a place in the Guinness Book of World Records!

I spent many years and $$ on sniffing things...

...the few times I have smoked cigars... no problem, because I didn't inhale. I never inhale the smoke from my pipes so, unless I'm an alien, I don't understand why anyone would get a "buzz" or a "rush" from smoking a pipe... I've smoked more different types of tobaccos than most of you could name... never had a "nic-hit." My opinion. YMMV. It's pretty common with cigar smokers - seems like most guys on cigar forums have a gross story to tell! I'm sure a lot has to with body chemistry and weight, whether you've eaten beforehand, and how often a person smokes. I guess we all inhale small amounts while smoking, but I think it's more a case of the nicotine being absorbed through the mouth tissues. I have read on some other threads that the PH of the tobacco will determine if it absorbs through your mouth. Typically VA are more base???, and therefore not absorbable as readily as cigar smoke.
