I don't know if I shared this with y'all. I owned a pretty successful paint and remodel business which I closed just before we went on vacation to California, I just got tired of the residents of the retirement village I live in beating me down over prices and being asked to fix the stuff their children messed up after I repainted or repaired it. The quotes were more than generous, for instance I offered to paint the ceilings, trim, and walls of a persons living room, hallway, dining room, and kitchen for 1600. and their reply was gosh that sounds pretty high could you do it for 1000. ? to which I replied NO! I just got tired of the hassle of dealing with customers and believe me I took a big hourly hit by closing the business down. The goosd news is that the week after I came back from vacation I started working for an electrical outfit and I'm pretty much digging it. It's much more relaxing to not have to listen to people bitch and moan about anything that they feel might bring the price down. Now I just show up on time, do what I'm told and collect my check on Friday. Having said that, These younger guys are pushing the old man to the limit and I think since the 2nd day I'm the only 1 who is qualified to climb a 16' a frame ladder. LOL! All in all I'm alive and getting in better shape and feeling much better about my life. Thanks for listening.

Congrats Jack,,,personally 10 ft is the best ladder I can handle, and with that I don't have to pre-shake the paint.

When I was in college, I worked for a plumbing company, made $6.50/hr when minimum wage was something like $1.85/hr (?) and piled up enough hours I was able to pass the journeyman test before I graduated. I wasn't afraid of getting up on roofs and installing flashings on vent stacks for new construction which was pure gold job security.
Best job I ever had. Good luck on the new job.

Congratulations!
My brother had a remodel business...'Now I am my own boss" he said...nothing could be further from the truth, every customer that walked in the door was his 'boss", and some were real hard taskmasters...Now with Yelp and other online sources, one crappy customer can make your life hell.
Glad that you found gainful employment without having o deal with the BS...I hope that the honeymoon period is a long one.

Congratulations on the job change and what looks like a better quality of life without the hassle of other people. Work would be A LOT easier if it wasn't for the people. We are a hard bunch to please.

Good luck, keep enjoying. I sympathize with your reasons. I have Some great customers. But, Jeez, believe it not some airplane owners are the cheapest SOBs around. I've had people bring me an airplane in buckets and they complained how much it cost and the time it takes to resurrect.

In those situations, my favorite is response is, "you can have fast, you can have high quality, you can have cheap, pick two."

Congrats on the change and I'm glad you're enjoying it.
16' ladder? That's childsplay! We have some huge ones that my boss absolutely refuses to get on. He says "I paid for it, you use it." I dont mind though. It's always a good time standing 20+ feet in the air with a paint brush in 1 hand and a paint cup in the other.
I dont do well dealing with picky people, it's the only reason I havent started working for myself yet. And when I do, I'm sure it wont be long before I regret it. Live and learn.
It is 105 with the heat index today, I'm glad it was an "easy day."
