Im looking into possibly getting a pipe in one of these shapes (Or something else bent that looks nice) I was curious for those of you that own these types of pipes: how do they smoke? Whats your experience with them been like?

I've got both and love smoking both. The calabashes are great looking as well as good smokers. The oompauls (I have 2, a gbd tapestry and a comoy #17,I believe...both excellent smokers that pass a cleaner right to the bottom of the bowl.

I like the ergonomics of them for sitting and smoking. They can feel great in the hand. Some draw great and others don't. Some of the old Custombilt and Tracy Mincer Oom Paul pipes are great values and have been great smoking pipes for me. I had a gourd calabash years ago that I wish I still had. It was an amazing smoker. Cool and comfortable.

I enjoy ALL of my Oom Paul pipes. If your going to purchase a Calabash pipe, get one with the removable bowl. Not just whatโs called โ Calabash style โ. ๐๐

A calabash is easier to make and smoke, a bad oom paul will make you want to kick puppies. Poorly drilled oom pauls will gurgle like an empty cup through a straw, good ones are a joy and comfortable for smoking while doing something with two hands. I only have one calabash, and it cant gurgle all the moisture just falls from the the stem into the chamber. Its also ceramic so a pita to clean the chamber out.

I own 30 plus Oom Paul pipes, not one gurgles. Most you can not pass a cleaner thru easily, but still excellent smokers. On 3 I did open the draft hole to alleviate a gurgling issue. Iโm an O0m Paul and nosewarmer lover๐๐๐

The Casseloni got me hooked. I still cant find ANY information on the company other than what you've told. It's a wonderful pipe.
I'll get a calabash one day, but no time soon.

No, I only have one oom paul because I'm gunshy of them. These other fellars have dropped a couple names that I wouldn't hesitate to buy. Probably the biggest catch with them is passing a cleaner, I would take the advice of @lonecoyote or any of the other fellars since they have a few. Or many in Ted's case.

Any brands you'd reccomend that typically have good drilling? "Good drilling" is relative. Any straight-drilled bent is gonna have "bad" drilling relative to a straight pipe. That's just the compromise made between engineering and clench-ability.
The only sure thing is a pipe drilled with a curved bit -- e.g. Brebbia "First Calabash"

Oom Pauls are tough, they have a serious bend right at the junction and when they aren't drilled and smoothed right a cleaner will hang up and not take care of any moisture issues closer to the chamber. It's not really relative its pretty cut and dry if the holes don't line up you're gonna have a bad time.

The best case on straight drilling in a bent pipe is that you can finagle a pipe cleaner.

I have a gourd calabash and it is a wonderful smoke. It is definitely an "armchair" pipe due to its size, but very comfortable to hold and smoke at home.

I have two Ed Burak's from his Connoisseur Pipe Shop in NYC (Retired). I like them very much and bought as estates!

Do you want New or Estate? What price range? Either or, somewhere around 80$-180$ preffered. This is in mint condition made with the old Algerian briar thatโs sought after in todayโs market. Make your first offer of $70.00. If he takes your offer your going to have yourself one great Oom Paul smoking pipe!! If I needed another I would not hesitate to go as high as $75.00 for this Old Mariner Oom Paul. Itโs a true Hungarian style as well. Take a look.......... www.ebay.com/itm/BIG-FULL-BENTVINTAGE-1960S-OLD-MARINER-OOM-PAUL-BIG-HUNGARIAN-NICE-RUSTICATED/372155153558?hash=item56a62cfc96:g:T4IAAOSwfVhaIoRgPS I DO NOT KNOW THE SELLER PERSONALLY. I HAVE PURCHASED TWO PIPES PRIOR WITH NO ISSUES. HE HAS A GOOD REPUTATION ๐๐๐

That pipe was a steal. I I had money I wouldn't have blinked at paying $600 for that one. 240 was ridiculous.

haveldad, are you interested in the true calabash, or a calabash shaped pipe? If it's the latter, then you can't beat the Butz Choquin Calabash. Beautifully designed and crafted, and great smokers. The Savinelli 604 is a great pipe at a decent price. Note that Oom Paul pipes are never cheap because they are hard to make. I got a couple of very old Italian ones from eBay that cleaned up great.

Over the last few years I have become a fan of Oom Paul, Hungarian and other "full bent" stem pipes, especially those that take some liberty with the shape. They are very comfortable and smoke relatively cool. If one prepares things properly, my experience has been pipe gurgling can be kept to a minimum (Somewhat like Lonewolf, most of my full bent pipes do not gurgle.). At the same time, I do acknowledge the limitations in the design and believe in being cautious when making a purchase.

Good heavens. This is a bout 1/4 what he wrote, with not one break for a paragraph. And Almost Everything is Capitalized!
Pretty great, huh?
On a serious note, I love my Hungarians a bunch.
