Acrylic seems like it would be OK, but I wouldn't try with "Vulcanized" rubber or Ebonite... but I have never done it with any of them, so... I'm no help at all...

I'd say you should be grand. You're putting a lot of moisture through the stem anyway from the moisture in the tobacco and from your breath, so rinsing them out shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't let them sit in the sun to dry.

I always rinse out the stem after smoking a pipe. I put smoked pipes in a large ashtray near the kitchen sink. And at the end of the day after they are cool, I remove the stem, rinse it in water, run a pipe cleaner dipped in cognac through it, buff it with a soft cloth, and put the pipe back in the rack to rest a few days before smoking it again. Then again--I am a bit obsessive compulsive.....

Use cool water with the ebonite stems. Hard rubber does not like hot water, it will turn brown quickly.

Yes it won't hurt them. I rinsed out my Kaywoodie stems all the time since the stinger prevents getting a pipe cleaner through.
The bigger issue is that you are out of pipe cleaners! Make sure to pick up several package every time you get tobacco. Hell running low on pipe cleaners is a great excuse to place an order or run down to the B&M. If you happened to get a free of of bulk or a tin or two as well, so much the better.

Cold water on vulcanite OK, but never run out of pipe cleaners because the shanks get pretty grizzly.

I've used a HOT water bath to reshape vulcanite stems and to clean up really grungy ones. But apply an oil or stem wax to seal them afterwards.Olive oil does help but a stem oil would probably last longer. A "nipple" brush from the baby section at wally world or a drug store works great at scrubbing a shank out.

I'd get me some pipe cleaners toot sweet sir. Yes you can rinse them out but, if Vulcanite is not dried off thoroughly it may start to turn green, Specially if put in direct sunlight. I keep all my pipes out of direct sunlight for there entire lives unless I'm outside smoking one and even then I try to shade it when ever I can if it has a Vulcanite stem. I'm sure you've seen those green nasty stems on some pipes, that comes from sunlight and moisture.
