my thoughts on fruity aro tobaccos is this.. if it grows on a tree or a bush and is also the flavor of a brandy... it works..... never had apple tobacco so I cant comment on that... but I do find the "pit" fruits make the best fruit flavors... peach..apricot… cherry... plum... things like that.. seeded berries work best for me with berry flavors.. raspberry... black berry.... never had blue berry tobacco and never wanted to try strawberry..
I know some of you are thinking.."Hey Crapgame.. brandy and cognac are made from grapes and so is wine..and all three are used to flavor tobacco!" To this is say." You are correct, move to head of the class!" Those flavors are used in pipe tobacco.. the grape flavor in question is the grape nehi ...bubble yum... pixie stick.. sugarfied fake flavors..... end of rant...

There is a line from movie called "Ford Fairlane" that is appropriate, if somewhat offensive - "It's like masterbating with a cheese grater. Mildly amusing, but mostly painful." For the hundredth time, it's Not THAT bad! well Ron.. just how bad is it then?

CBG is good - M79 is bad. I wanted to make sure I never ran out. I dont smoke it often but when I do I get to blow bubbles like when I was a kid on the ball field.

If you like lakeland blends, #79 may work for you. I didn't think it was a "bad" blend.
In all honesty, I really don't like that phrase, "bad blend". Every blend is somebody's favorite. If somebody doesn't like a blend, they don't like it, and are entitled to that opinion. What we like is fairly subjective anyway, so why trash something somebody likes? Btw, these comments are for a general audience, not aimed at my friend Chico in any way, shape or form. I don't want anybody getting the wrong idea about that.
Hear! Hear! I smoke a lot of blends that others find unpalatable. Many favorites of others are just kind of meh to me. I don't think I have ever had a bad blend. I actually like M79. It smells like root beer and tastes like licorice and flowers. I fail to see how anyone could not like it. CBG on the other hand I have been scared to try. Not sure if I am more worried about not liking it, or finding out that I really love and it.

Isn't all the Captian Black, Super Value, Smokers Pride, etc: the same? They are all Black Cavendish and some sort of flavorings and additives. No. There are different types and qualities of both the Cavendish and the flavoring. Take Wilke Rumcake for example. A premium blend by any standard.

To me, it smells like a mixture of laundry soap and mothballs. I really wasn't brave enough to smoke it, and I have tried smoking some really strange stuff.

I haven't tried it myself, but I'm told Captain Black Grape really shines when mixed with other tobaccos, to moderate the grape flavor and bring out a little fruit in otherwise sedate blends.
Before you dismiss the mighty Grape, try it 50/50 with rubbed-out Stonehaven

That's what a of people say about M79.... Actually I'm tempted to try it again, since my only experience with it was very early in my pipe smoking career. I thought it was hideous, but tastes change. Maybe not that much, though. If you like lakeland blends, #79 may work for you. I didn't think it was a "bad" blend.

Thanks, Jim. I read all reviews with a mental disclaimer: "it's one person's opinion," so I hope mine will always be read the same way. I tend to get carried away with my adjectives, especially if I really like or dislike a blend. Your balanced reviews and lack of bias are really uncommon, and I think that's why so many people find them valuable.

I have a feeling that I'd like it. Since it all tastes the same to me, it doesn't really matter. But still...

Hi I remember when Captain Black (CB) Grape first came on the market. There were a number of reviewers that thought it was really good, even from folks who disliked Captain Black overall. Personally, I avoided all "Over the Counter"(OTC) blends for years. First because I am mainly a Virginia & English (and related blends/tobaccos)smoker. Second the PG content and the general perception that OTC blends were inferior (quality of leaf, taste etc.)to other blends also turned me away. One day I decided to take the risk and sample a few OTC blends. One that I found surprising was Captain Black Copper. A blend that made me more open to OTC experiences.Copper is worth a try.
PS I have not tried CB grape. This does not mean I will not someday. However as my preference for Virginia and English types of blends has not changed, CB grape is not a priority.

You got to use that as a condiment. Try mixing with an English or Balkan. It’s good with Margate.

But I have a problem with the specific topping on EGR that most people don't.

Captain Black Royal was what I smoked when I first picked up the pipe again, and I still enjoy it. If it wasn't for the bad influence of the forums, I might have never smoked anything else and been happy. I still enjoy a bowl of CBR regularly.

plenty of it in Ireland. Stop giving me ideas. That stuff is great in the fireplace, but I wouldn't want to smoke it. When we were there they were using it in the electric power plants. We though the air smelled great around them. I have peat logs to burn in a chiminea. Makes the back porch homey. To me the peat is what makes Scotch. I would rather drink Jameson than a low peat Scotch.

Given that most applications for peat that I know of involve using peat smoke, not peat directly, I suspect it would be pretty vile. Now, maybe a Scots /Irish version of latakia or DFK by smoking tobacco over a peat fire -- that has possibilities! How about Old Peat Fired? Should go well with my Laphroig.
