I have an old manhattan briar that has seen some heat but no sign of burning out, its the way I pack my bowls not the pipe. But it refuses to char. It must have some mystical power that I can't crack. It gets hot sure, but when I manage a good bowl it smokes great.

I once sold an NOS unsmoked Peterson pipe to a fellow on Ebay, who smoked it for two weeks, burned a hole in it, and requested a refund on Ebay. I didn't feel like it was my fault that the pipe burned out, but Ebay took the money out of my bank account and refunded the pipe. I got it back and saw where it burned through at the junction of the shank and the bowl. I sent it back to Peterson and they replaced it!

That is what drives me nuts about Ebay...you have some little dweeb with no knowledge of pipes in a cubicle making judgments....my wife had a similar situation where a buyer, with their first purchase took a razor blade to the purse, my wife even had pictures proving that there was no cuts....The Dweeb figured that they wanted to keep the newbie around and we had nowhere else to go. My wife now sells elsewhere. That speaks well of Peterson though, wise decision on your part.

The first time was back in the eighties when one of their system pipes split underneath the silver band and started to leak. They replaced it with a new deluxe! They have good customer service.

I guess , I would be happy about the customer service. I don't own a Peterson just want to get a Sherlock series at some point just to say I have one . But from what I have read they are up and down, at-least they stand by their problems.

I have nothing to add except my admiration for the invention of new words. un-burnoutable is a stroke of genius, and the hyphen gives it an air of authenticity

Almost needs an exclamation mark but I figured id stick with my signature,?

Yeah, I guess I've been lucky. None of my pipes have every burned through, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I don't smoke them like I'm trying to sinter glass inside them.

I wonder if they are having problems sourcing briar? The ones I bought in the 70's and 80's were of good quality.

I wonder if they are having problems sourcing briar? The ones I bought in the 70's and 80's were of good quality. The Peterson “ Bubble Series “ was released from 2015 to late 2017. I named that series because for some odd reason Peterson made pipes stained/dyed black and coated them with a lacquer that would bubble if the briar reached a medium heat level. If you tend to smoke a hot pipe the bubbles would pop and look like small volcanoes erupting!! I refinished 3 briars and to this day I’m clueless why Peterson used a “ flawless “ piece of briar and decided to cover up the beauty of the wood. Not one fill on the 3 Peterson pipes I refinished. Personally I wouldn't purchase a new Pete if it was available @ 50% off! Give me a Pete from the 80’s and prior and I’d be a happy pipe smoker👍👍👍

At our pipe night at the cigar lounge, I spoke for awhile with our Laudisi representative, and told him that from what I see in the online pipe community, the Peterson QC issues of the past are front and center on the is of many as they are taking over...he said that it s front and center with them.
Sykes wasn't looking to buy Peterson, it came out of the blue to them with nary a hint beforehand, but they decided that it made sense.

Charlie, if any company that cares about their customers like Laudisi/Smokingpipes does, they’re the company that will make the QC of Peterson Pipes what they were known for in the past, one only hopes!!

The wife and I are going to Dublin in October. I'll pop into the peterson shop and I'll pass on all your qc issues to them and see what they say.

Mines a 1908 manhattan and its taken more than its fair share of abuse. But no matter the wear'n'tear it keeps coming back for more. It does feel like a different kind of briar when compared to my other pipes. Seems to be algerian though, I base this only on feel.

Funny how a thread about a Manhattan pipe turned into another Peterson bashing thread.

When I hear the name "Sykes", I think of the movie Alien Nation. To Mandy Patinkin's character it's a dirty word that made him giggle.
