These three new offerings will be on sale in November in 1.5 ounce MacBaren-like style tins.
Sutliff Crumble Kake English #1: The woody, earthy, musty, lightly leather-like and moderately sweet Cyprian latakia is the lead component, though it doesn’t dominate the other varietals. In a strong support role are the various aged, tangy red Virginias, which offer dark fruit, quite a bit of earth, some wood, and extremely light floral, sour and bread notes. The floral, dry, mildly buttery sweet and sour, earthy, woody Orientals fall a step below the red Virginias in the line up for the most part, though once in a while, it’s almost even money. The nutty, earthy, woody, lightly sweet burley js just below the level of the Orientals in terms of effect. The strength and taste marks are medium. The nic-hit is a little closer to medium than it is to mild. No chance of bite or harshness, but a rough edge may pop up here and there. The crumble cake is mildly moist, and easy to break apart. Well balanced with a little complexity, it burns cool, clean and a touch slow with a fairly consistent, tangy sweet and mildly savory flavor all the way to the last ember. Leaves little dampness in the bowl. Requires a few relights. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste, and the room note is not very pungent. Can be an all day smoke for the veteran, and is certainly repeatable for the less experienced.
Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia: The various aged red Virginias provide tangy dark fruit, quite a bit of earth, some wood, and extremely light floral, sour and bread notes. They have some aspects of both McClelland 5100 and C&D’s Carolina Red Flake. The strength and taste levels fall a step short of medium. The nic-hit is a hair short of the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite or get harsh, but once in a while, you may notice a light rough edge. This crumble cake is mildly moist, and easily broken apart. Burns cool, clean and slightly slow with a very consistent flavor from top to bottom. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires just slightly more than an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste and room note. An all day smoke that would also make a good mixer. Three and a half stars out of four.
Sutliff Crumble Kake Va. Perique: The tangy, earthy, woody, lightly floral and bready, dark fruity matured red Virginias are the lead components. The tingly spicy, raisiny, plummy, perique is a supporting player. The unsweetened black cavendish provides a little smoothing sugar in the background. The perfectly intermingled varietals create a harmonious, deep, consistent sweet and lightly savory flavor from start to finish. The strength level barely reaches medium, while the taste sits squarely on that mark. The nic-hit is just past the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite or get harsh. This mildly moist crumble kake easily breaks apart and burns cool, clean, and a tad slow. Hardly leaves any dampness in the bowl, and depending on how one prepares the tobacco, may require some relights. Has a very pleasant, mildly lingering after taste and room note. The blend packs a little punch, but not enough to preclude it from being an all day smoke, especially for veteran pipers.

Great reviews, Jim. How many stars do you give English #1 and Virginia Perique?

As always Jim....excellent reviews!!! Even though I’m constantly saying “ no more new blends, I’m done spending money “, I feel I owe it to myself as a treat to at least try #1 and #2.....the cake with the Perique I’ll pass.
I must ask you.....did you have a particular one of the three you sampled you preferred??
That’s why Sutliff is not releasing these three new offerings until after their rate increase!!

Ted, I prefer not to give an opinion like that so my reviews stay objective. I wouldn't be so quick to leap to the conclusion that they are waiting for a price increase to sell them. If that was the case, they'd probably release them in October instead of waiting for November. Crumble kake blends take some time to process and I'm sure they are still producing them. I was given sample tins.

Jim, I would love to have 25% of your sophisticated and discriminating palate; maybe one of these days. Still I very much appreciate your reviews as it lets me know what to taste for or at least expect, and what tobaccos to avoid at this point. The only thing discriminating about my pipe smoking at this point, are the looks I receive from my wife when yet another tobacco/pipe order shows up!

Our first blend to sample as a pipe club is Gold Block, an aromatic... I hope that these blends are in the pipeline for us!
Thanks for the reviews , Jim!

Sounds like they're trying to pick up the ball for McClelland - Good on them. Thanks for the reviews Jim. Mark, I remember reading on another forum a few months ago that someone asked if Sutlif would be able to pick up and make a quality VA tobacco.. the"'Senior Member society" AKA the we know better than you know members tried to scold the member that asked the question if Sutliff would be able to produce a quality VA blend.. Wish I still creeped that site to have a good laugh and the snob clubs expense!

I feel like Sutliff's reputation has always been a little undeserved. I can't think of a thing I've had from them that I did not draw some enjoyment from. I know they do a lot of aros that are sauced into oblivion, but I still find these to be pleasant smoking experiences (79 doesn't count, but someone out there apparently likes it!) , but they are clearly are capable of a great blend of any variety! These all look excellent, I'll probably pick up all three.

Apple Flavor is the only one so far to get low ratings from me. First few puffs have a gentle apple essence but then that quickly goes away and turns into a very chemical taste.

Some Sutliff blends have been way over topped, but then they do stuff like 515 RC-1, and Match Ready Rubbed, and my go-to Aromatic English. I can't slight them. They make stuff that appeals to everyone, not just the hoity toity crowd. If that's a reputation killer, then I'll just smoke what the snobs won't. More for me!
