Was perusing the internet today and found out I missed a seasonal blend last year. Apparently there was a Rattray's Winter Edition 2017 that I didn't know about.
This morning I sent a not to one of the guys at Mayan Imports and asked that they check with their distributor to see if they had any left.
Five minutes later, I get a call telling me that 2017 wasn't available but they could get the Winter Edition 2018. I have two tins on order now.

My amazing local B&M's have made pipe smoking a delight. I can go and talk shop with the owner and knowledgeable employees. It's a very nice environment. Pretty much all of the employees know my face so they have no problem letting me behind that counter to look at the shelves. A while back I was talking to the owner about my very small pipe collection. I told him that I wanted to get a pipe rack instead of just laying them on the shelf. I asked him if he sold any and he told me no he didn't. At the end of the conversation, he told me he would do some digging around and see if he could find any nice vintage racks to fix up and sell for me. Time went by and I forgot about it for the most part. I went in for the first time in about a month last week and as I'm checking out he mentions that he finally found a nice one and to come in next week, this week now, to pick it up. Gonna swing by tomorrow and grab it. I love going there.

J&R’s In Selma, NC has a good selection of pipe tobacco’s and a nice on premise smoking lounge. If your looking for a particular tobacco you’ll find a staff member that will either help you locate the blend or check it’s availability, if not in stock and still available they will special order it for you. A few staff members enjoy smoking a pipe but prefer a cigar. You will always see a few employees enjoying a good cigar....great incentive to work at J&R’s👍👍👍

That's a great story, pappyjoe. I hope it's a good blend. I doubt my b&m would do the same for me.

You guys are lucky. Back in the '70s we had several here in DFW but not any more. The B&Ms left are mainly cigar stores with maybe 12 or so tinned blands, some re-named Lane bulks and maybe 24 pipes. Even the only Edwards left in Dallas is a giant walk-in cigar humidor. Thank God for SP !

Miss the good ol days when pipes n tobaccos were bought n sold n enjoyed at the neighborhood hearth n home shop. The proprietors really knew their trade and walked the walk... always had a warm comforting feeling when making my twice weekly baccy shop jaunt.

I too wish I had a B&M within a 2 hour drive. Ireland is so small I consider my b&m, which would be a 20 min drive on a good day, too far.

We have a local one but it's not very good. I'll stop by tomorrow and see what they have available. I know they have cigars and I NEED a few more A.F. 858 Maduro's anyway. Who knows? I might hit the jackpot

If you're not one of the old regulars, you're just an annoyance. The local cigar shop has great customer service, but a limited pipe tobacco selection.

I haven't visited what's possibly the only local pipe tobacconist in town. Every tobacconist that I've gone to has been cigar focused. None of them even carry Rattray's much less order a Christmas blend for me

We have a new B&M opened in Edmond,Ok.It's about a 30 minute drive from me.Problem is it's the wrong direction from where I'm usually headed.I need to stop in and see what they have. The next closest, the people working it tend to piss me off so I don't feel comfortable going there.Customer service will either make or break any store. Congrats Pappy on find some real TREASURES there.

I haven't visited what's possibly the only local pipe tobacconist in town. LoL! This is why most shops don't bother with stocking pipe stuff or what they have is dusty. Stop in you never know what you will find. I picked up a few dusty tins of FM ATP last spring.

Shops can be cliquey and cold, big city shops/lounges usually are the worst with a macho big city attitude. I just go in like I own the place, pick up a few sticks, mind my own bidness, guys get curious about you and by the time you leave you're one of the gang.

Took my son to a cigar tasting a few years back.We were sitting in the lounge smoking, talking cigars with a few other customers.after about an hour or so,we left out. My son had to work that night.I got home and was talking with the Mrs.,when I noticed a news piece on tv.I told my wife "That's the guy Eric and I were smoking cigars with!" Coach Bob Stoops, former head coach at OU.Great guy, reall knows how to appreciate a good stick.

I don't have any decent ones in my area. They focus on cigars and vaping and the ones that have pipes don't know anything about them and the tobacco selection is overpriced OTC's. I heard Allegheny Smokeworks in Pittsburgh is a pretty good one and it's about an hour drive for me,hopefully the Pittsburgh area members can verify this for me before I make the hour drive down.

Consider Allegeheney Smokeworks verified. Be sure to get on their mailing list so that you have the dates for the Pipe Club there.

I can see a time in the not too distant future where buying tobacco online will be forbidden by the nannies either at the state level like Washington state, or at the Federal level.
Our pipe club is working on developing a great relationship with our B&M...we have seen great improvements in his offerings, and we are working on a strategy for him to get unobtainium blends for us. The benefit of a pipe club meeting regularly, you can give advice on what the members want, and it can point him in the direction of stocking what will move.

I can't say enough for Allegheny Smokeworks. Great selection of bulk and tins. Decent pipe selection on hand as well. The guys are great- friendly and knowledgable, though when I hang out there, I tend to leave with more than I planned on buying. Haha Most Pipers would kill for a shop this good in their town.

Went there this past April while in FW. and was sadly dissapointed!

The nearest pipe & tobacco shop is 150 miles from me. The next nearest over 200 miles .
You used to be able to find one or two shops even in large shopping malls. Not any more in my region. Driven outta business by high taxes.

Driven outta business by high taxes. Some of us are fortunate to have tobacconists within a reasonable driving distance. However, even though I have two good choices here in the San Francisco area, I end up purchasing 99% of my tobacco online. Age and mobility is a factor, but I'm happy these B&Ms still exist.
