This just came out for dog and cat owners:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners and veterinarians that some flea and tick medications can cause adverse reactions in dogs and cats.
Some animals receiving drugs in the isooxazoline class have experienced adverse events such as muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures, according to the FDA.
The medicine includes Bravecto, Nexgard, and Simparica. Another product in this class is Credelio, which recently received FDA approval. The FDA says these products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations.
Check with your Vet to see what to use to replace these meds. I have a dog with epilepsy and have been using Simparica...I may be causing her to have the muscle tremors she has been having. I am really pissed about this. Check your meds and see if you have them, too.

That's absolutely terrible Walt! But it's not your fault if it is the cause. The bright side is, if it is the meds, her seizures should stop when you change? Or does it cause permanent effects?

Morning Josh, I don't know if it is a permanent situation with the isoxaazoline...I have a call in to the Vet Pharmacy and will post any info I get.

Just talked with our Vet and the Pharmacy Mgr. at the Vet Hospital...they are one of the top in Florida. They are saying that the FDA HAS NOT done tests on these meds and they are not causing tremors. The FDA information is anecdotal and not based on tests done. These Vet people I have spoken with are top of the line Drs. They stay updated in the medicine end of the spectrum...If they took my insurance I would trust them with my life and now obviously my dogs. We all know how the FDA works...so sorry for the scare...but I'm sticking with the Vets opinion and advice.

At least you got clarification quickly and have helped others who may have also heard the same story.

Anecdotal evidence can have great value. Vets, pharmacies, labs, and testing facilities can have financial conflicts of interests that may skew their defense of a particular product. Even the most well-intentioned will turn a blind eye to adverse reactions and attribute them to other possible causes despite a preponderance of anecdotal evidence and likelihood. Use these flea and tick products with great care and vigilance once applied. I have seen the horrors that they can cause.

Thanks for posting this. Our first Yorkie died because Zima dip destroyed his kidneys and liver. They pulled it off the market too late.

I should have known...when I saw the letters FDA. While it is true that anecdotal information is useful...FDA information especially when they don't mention the testing used...may be heavily biased.

During flea season here in S. Florida, I use a very fine flea comb 2x daily, and bathe 2x/month with Baby shampoo & conditioner, then apply warm coconut oil to moisturize the skin. My animals are strictly indoors yet can be irritated by fleas that make their way in somehow and breed. Control is not always easy the way I do it, but it's a quantum leap safer for my beloved pets, who's precious lives I will protect without compromise.

Dawn dish soap kills fleas as well. It's what they use to clean animals coated in oil. My dogs got a dawn bath and then conditioned with my ex wife's conditioner

If you do pick up a tick, the best tool i found for removing them is the tick key, I got mine at Basspro, but they are easily found online.
That video points out limitations, but in the three times I used it on others, it worked fine.

Use to keep flies off my horse for a full 48 hours as well. So, my conclusion........if you wash your dishes with Dawn you best rinse with HOT water👍

Thank you all for your additional input. My wife and I do rescue dogs because we love the ones that have never had love. Rescue dogs will brighten anyone's' life....knowing they will be put down in short order if not adopted. If you are going to get a dog or cat...please visit your local shelter or better yet check the NC or SC shelters that have critters from the storm.
Please be careful about what you put on your critter...many of the topical medications can give them skin issues with prolonged usage...it's poison! If you wouldn't put it on yourself, why would you think your dog or cat would enjoy it?

Side note for those with dogs that have dry skin. Get chlorhexidine 4%+PS antiseptic shampoo from your vet (prescription). If your dog has sensitive skin or dry skin from other types of topical applications this shampoo will lift the dander off their skin and leave it clean...helps with staph infections too.
This was a Godsend when our "kids" had staph problems on their skin.

It works. I had a Pitbull that had terribly dry skin and that stuff worked.
Also a rescue dog that had untreated demodectic mange. The stuff I had to put on her made her skin really dry, so that was prescribed again.

Thank you...I was hesitant to put this out there as it is not a dog rescue site...but everyone feels like family, so I took a chance...and if it helps a critter, it is worth any criticism.

I have Tengard pumped through the outdoor misters when the pipe club convenes outside, it keeps them from bugging me about updating the meetings.

Fleas just hate plain old table salt and ticks as well as flies just don't like sulfer. That's why I always keep a handy dandy sulfer salt block around for my best friend the ninja chihuahua. Also police that dog that steaming pile in the grass attracts bad things fast. If you are planning a trip to the wild put a good flea and tick collar on your beast but remember to remove it a few days after you get home. I view those magic flea and tick powders the same way let them do there job and give a fido a nice bath do not use your wife's good shampoo or you life cycle will be shorter than a fly.

There's some good advice here. Thank you.
