Today I decided to rummage around through boxes of Bowls and Cherrywood stems that had been laying about, I lazily put them away and hadn't done much with them that I had gotten at a brick and mortar auction house a few years ago. I matched up what seemed to be the stem that works well with the pipe and commenced on cleaning it. The carbon buildup in the old gal was more than I could bear to smoke in this 100 year old pipe so, I put to reaming the carbon, cleaning the stem and shank as best I could (ran out of Everclear ), and polished the silver along with a coat of beeswax applied with my Makita heatgun. I used Old English furniture polish on the Cherrywood stem, autosol on the bit with an obsidian oil to finish. The stem is not amber, it has more of a texture like acrylic, but is isn't acrylic...as you can see it is a threaded stem. The nice thing about these pipes is, once you screw in the mouthpiece it is never unclocked, just rotate the stem in the shank, compression fit. I will have to wait until I get some Everclear for an inaugural smoke...all seems tight though, with a nice draw. The silver Hallmarked stampings on both sides of the rim are JK, the best I could figure out is Jacob KOPPENHAGEN trading as KOPPENHAGEN BROTHERS - London 1886-1889, which might be period correct? i cannot say for certainty though. www.silvercollection.it/DICTIONARYTOBACCONISTJ.html

Not sure...decisions, decisions....probably some Captain Black Grape! Seriously, it will probably be some Peter Heinrich's Dark Strong Flake...I have had a hankering to open a can of that.

(1) A beautiful old, classic pipe. I love when old pipes are given life again! (2) GEAUX TIGERS
* Not necessarily in that order!

Thanks guys, I have a couple others, one is exquisite and really fun for festive smoking during the Holidays, I break out some Christmas Cheer and enjoy the lap pipe with the family. I hope that after I am long gone, that one of my grandkids remember it and can enjoy it in their family traditions. The stem is missing from the pic, it is horn..a little bit of beetle damage near the button but otherwise pretty nice shape.

Beautiful pipe, Charlie. I'd like it as a decoration alone. 👍

Beautiful pipe, Charlie. I'd like it as a decoration alone. 👍 In my last post, my wife wanted me to commission a pipe rest to put it in the mantle above the fireplace, but with tile floor below, I really didn't want to be party to cracking up a pipe from 1864...better off in a carpeted room, I know myself too well.

Thanks guys! After smoking some Yorktown, I got a bit woozy...not really a heavy nic blend, but in that tall bowl, it became one. It was many lights at the start, but once she got going, it was a very enjoyable smoke, and delivered a fine white ash. I think the old gal just needed a reacquaintance to the gentle art of smoking after such a long rest. I never did make it out to get Everclear, but there was no noticeable ancient ghosting, nevertheless and Everclear cleaning is on the roster for her. If you ever smoke a pipe like this, it is imperative that you not lose sight of the fact that this is a compression fit stem and you have a heavy bowl at the bottom, so it is always best to remain sitting and have a soft surface under your feet, I have never had one of my bowls drop off the stem, but that is a possibility. That is why they typically have a chain to tether the two together, as you can see only one of the three has a chain, I am going to rectify that in the future though. Old chains are easy to be had on the estate market, and I know a jeweler that can make the rings that I need. I described it as a lap pipe, but this one is more like a chest sitter.

Sounds like you had a great experience with it. That's crazy that the bowl is chained to the stem.

Sounds like you had a great experience with it. That's crazy that the bowl is chained to the stem. When you unscrew the mouthpiece, the collar slides off at the top, the same on the bottom. If you look at the largest pipe, you see a silver ring at the top of the shank, that was where the original silver chain was, I imagine that sadly someone repurposed it... based on the quality of that pipe l, it must have been an ornate chain.
