Since bamboo has a protective coating, called enamel, which is somewhat thick depending on how much sun it saw while growing and how long it has sat drying it was more than likely just waxed and buffed. A bamboo flyrod has the enamel sanded down and often a plane run over it to flatten it, the node (what we call the knuckle) is pressed with a hot iron depending on the maker as to what exactly is used. Due to the node being sanded, planed and flattened it is actually a weak spot in the bambo strip which is why the best bamboo rod makers utilize a staggered node placement for the 6 (there are 4, 5 and 7 strip rod also) strips so that there are no nodes next to one another in the stagger. banjo
