Just had an email from P&C wanting me to verify my age before they could mail my order. WTF, been ordering from them forever, maybe when I asked for the 20% discount yesterday I came on their radar? Took a picture of my drivers license, not a very good picture but then I ain’t a handsome subject and you got it P&C.

SP has (or had) the same policy. I had to send them a copy of my driver's license a couple of years ago. Probably a case of CYA on their part.

Tobaccopipes requested my birthdate, but did not ask for my drivers license, while I was on the phone he matched my birthdate and name which I assume is in a database, and he told me that it was a one time deal. I like that more than asking for a photocopy of my DL.
I can understand why they are verifying ages though. All it would take is for a kid to order tobacco online, his parents find out, and now you are being sued by a state attorney general, other states want to get in on the action as they smell the pot of gold, which would start in the millions....and now politicians have a reason to call for the end of “the tobacco selling to kids loophole.”, and internet sales are done.
I hope that sheds some light.

I can not accept that. There are probably random ID checks built into the software just to satisfy regulators. And there may be some random checks that are there for OUR protection too (to make sure we are not using a stolen credit card). An acceptable inconvenience IMO. Just like it was inconvenient for some of us to be asked for ID while buying beer at 25 or 30 yrs old.

I think the automated system uses credit databases to verify your age.
If you don't have a lot of credit accounts, or you recently moved, there wouldn't be a lot of data there.

PC....
Orders missing items. Substitutions I never wanted or asked for. "Back ordered" orders never filled. Confusingly refunded. And now a 20% off sale AFTER I order.
DONE.

Maybe you asked for the senior citizen's discount? No reason to verify your age after being a customer for years....I’d tell them to “ GO FLY A KITE “!!

Same for other age restricted items such as ammo - one time submittal of your driver's license. It's inconvenient, but understandable. Though it seems to be hit or miss as I've never had P&C ask for ID, and not all ammo companies have asked either. Maybe it's a percentage thing - they have to ask so many customers, but not all?

I worked in a call centre for a while after uni and there was something like that there. Random accounts needed checks done.

My very first time with P&C: I knew nothing about the age thing other than I clicked an extra box. I ordered it with my regular email address. I have about 5. I paid for it with one of my paypal accounts. We have four. Well, I paid for it with the wrong one. Not that there was an issue. The transaction went through. Never sent. Nothing. I finally called them and they told me the issue. My email addy didn't match the one on the paypal account though the receiving address and my name (Xuan was the top name on that one) were all the same. They told me that I would have to go through all sorts of BS. Well, I told whomever it was to go F himself. When I was doing biz with them a few months later, after spending 1K with them they hit me with the verification again. I don't drive. I had to send a copy of my birth cert.
Now the real joke. When they want to get out of selling you a backordered item at sale price they say your authorization expired. Yet the hold for 56.00 was on my paypal account for 3 months. They would do nothing and paypal claimed they could not.
Why do business with them? I don't, but that is since I have all of their unique tobaccos I can't get elsewhere. If I can I will pay 30% more if I have to, to buy it from someone else.
I'll wait for someone now to tell me I shouldn't post about it, just quit doing business with them. I won't respond, but in my mind I will be going to town on that person.
Edit - Before anyone mentions it they never told me it wasn't going to ship. Nothing until my call

I should have ordered some tin cups when I could. Will be needing them soon. AND PENCILS

Once ANY retailer asks for PROOF...I’d no longer do business with them....case closed. Don't come to Louisiana and expect to buy alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, some drug store prescriptions, an automobile, etc. I have been "carded" in all of those cases and I'm 65. I asked about it the last time I had to show my ID to buy beer in a grocery store. The manager said one of his "idiot" checkers didn't check the age on someone buying beer and it was an undercover operation. The store got off with a small fine and a warning but now they check everyone's age regardless of how decrepit they look. Shortly after my local B&M moved locations and started operating under a new name and owner, the state passed some regulation that required them to verify the ages of their customers. They had a notebook where they would write down Names, Date of Birth and Zipcode. About a year later they were told it was no longer necessary.

They had a notebook where they would write down Names, Date of Birth and Zipcode. About a year later they were told it was no longer necessary. Here in NC whenever I pick up my Meds my drivers license must be swiped into their “ No Scripts “ data base, that’s to be expected, it’s a Federal law. No ABC store ( liquor store ) requires me to show my license unless I’m paying with a credit card. The name on my license MUST match the credit card I’m using. Here I’ve never been asked to show proof of age when purchasing a lottery ticket, guess they realize I’m of age. Any online retailer when signing up asks your date of birth, phone number and address. I’ve never been asked to show ID if/when I purchase beer at any supermarket. If I were asked I have no problem showing my drivers license......but NOBODY will make a copy other then my doctors office, Dept of Motor Vehicles or the Sheriffs Department if asked. If your drivers license ID number gets into the “ wrong “ hands your identity can be compromised and used fraudulently. The day ANY retailer asks for a copy of my drivers license is the day I no longer do business with them!!

Good grief, pappyjoe , that's crazy. I understand a blanket check for anyone who at least LOOKS around 30 being carded, but 65???! Some of the grocery stores have been hit with hefty fines for not checking IDs. The state police routinely send young undercover operatives into stores to buy cigarettes and alcohol. At one time they were even using volunteer high school and college students. They would go in, make or try to make the purchase and walk out the store. The next person in would be a detective or agent from the state. Stores learned it was easier to just ask everyone for their IDs.

Yes, But at $1500 for a first offense (plus the worker is ticketed for $500 and has to go through a mandatory how to check ID class). I would just say check everyone too.

Paddy, checking one’s ID is completely different from making a copy. I have no issues if asked to show my drivers license.

And pappyjoe - for those fines I'd be the same. Some places do the same here. The UK policy is that if you look under 21 then you'll be asked; if you look over 60 then you won't be. And, to clarify, when I said it was shocking, it was not that everyone is checked, I was more shocked that people who are in their 60s are being checked. I suppose, better safe than sorry.
