There are several things about it that don't look like either my new or very old Comoy's. Sorry I can't help you.

Used to be...if it had a "C"on it...it was free of fill...don't know about that particular pipe...might be a stem off another pipe.

I just acquired this estate Comoy's and have been looking for more information on it but can find nothing searching the net. I believe it is A Straight Bulldog with a beautiful pearlized stem. Stamped N559 and stamped with an E on the opposite side. I'm curious about the age of the pipe. Also can find nothing about what the "E" is code for. The pipe seems to have a fair amount of filler on the bowl which makes me wonder if it has been previously restored as I would expect Comoy's would have handed it down to one of their seconds labels. Also the Made In London England appears double stamped. I feel I got a great deal on this pipe, can't wait to smoke it. Here are some pics. It's a 1980s Comoy's, from the darkest days of the marque. It's plainly a post-1980 pipe because it has an acrylic stem, a silk-screened "C" (instead of inlaid), the generally poor quality of the stummel. (Fills, pits, double-stamping) It's pre-2000s because it's still made in England, rather than France, and again, the poor quality of the stummel.
1980 was the year that Oppenheimer/Cadogan shut down all but one of their English pipe factories. Comoy's, Loewe & Co, GBD, and BBB were all consolidated at the Orlik factory in Southend-on-Sea. This was not a great outcome for any of these brands.
"Dark days" are an aesthetic matter, not functional. I have some GBD pipes from that era and that very same factory that are riddled with visible flaws and smoke like champs. Collectors prize the pre-1980 pipes because they look cooler, not because the pipes don't smoke well.

To elaborate further, I have three GBDs in the exact same shape (9456).
One pre-1980 example has outstanding grain and perfect workmanship. It's a truly beautiful pipe, a work of art. It only smokes so-so. It's not a gurgler or anything, it just doesn't bring out the best in my favorite tobaccos.
Another is post-1980, has crap grain and a botched stain, and the stem looks like it was cut by a drunkard busy using his other hand for other activities. Despite its aesthetic shortcomings, it is an outstanding smoker. Tobacco smoked from this piece of s**t pipe tastes better than almost any other I own. It is my very favorite briar pipe.

Thanks for the information. I thought it must have been from a modern era because the C didn't appear inlaid, but I wasn't sure when any of this changed. I wish it lacked the filler as I am in love with the stem and If the bowl looked as nice it would be spectacular. I did buy it as a smoker not a collectible so function comes over form any day. I'm hoping it will be a good smoker though I'm not sure I know what that is yet.

What a shame...a well respect name in the pipe world...shot to hell for the sake of money. I love all my old Comoy pipes and was happy and proud to gift them to a special friend...AJ says he is enjoying them all,

The pipe industry was shrinking rapidly at the time.

I'm hoping it will be a good smoker though I'm not sure I know what that is yet. I'm still learning myself. Some pipes just taste better than others and I have no idea how or why.
