I've been sitting at my desk applying for jobs all day, and the amount of ridiculous redundant redundancies in these applications forms is ridiculous (see what I did there?). I am officially taking a break until tomorrow....oh wait...it is tomorrow....time to smoke a bowl, go to bed, and get up bright and early for work...yay....

Sounds like a rough start job hunting, alas there isn't often an ease to such things. A short reprieve and then back at it in the morn.

Good Luck, ExB. I failed an honesty test once. The manager told me I was too honest.Take a rest, but don't lose the game. It's closing in on 20 years since my accident and I miss what I did. Will keep some prayers and thoughts for you

Those forms are soul-destroying. I hope you find a new job soon and you can stop filling in those painstakingly annoying forms.

Ok, based on the responses, let me clarify: I am not currently jobless, I am finishing up my PhD and am going on the job market in October. I will be interviewing soon and setting up a job for next year once I defend my dissertation in May. Just wanted to get that out there so no one thought I was suffering other than through the redundancies :-)

I was thinking you were doing a PhD. But still, finding a place can be tough. I was there once after I did my post doctoral research. Universities were wanting me to have had a ton of papers, which I didn't have.
Although, that helped me change career path so I didn't mind, but still... I hope places are lining up to have you.

As do I. I'm told by my dissertation chair and most of the faculty here that I shouldn't have a problem finding a place, simply because I am willing to move pretty much anywhere, and since I am a citizen, no visas or issues where the hiring school has to sponsor. So we'll see. Cheers!

exbenedict, I have been "between jobs" for a couple months. Lots of job applications, but little response.
Here are some suggestions. While looking, dress for the job you want, even if that requires a tie. Don't search for a professional job, while wearing sweats. This will help your attitude.
OK, I haven't read books on employment in years, but now I am devouring books on interviewing etc.
Make time for search and also for fun activities and family time.
Get on Linkedin.com. I am finding it very helpful for contacting my former coworkers.
Be strong and consistent.

Good luck in your search and the dissertation process. What is your area of interest, if you don’t mind my asking?

Happily self employed with a career doing something I love and not a job, thankfully.

Good luck in your search and the dissertation process. What is your area of interest, if you don’t mind my asking? My PhD will be in Finance, but I am focusing on corporate, entrepreneurship, small business and asset management. I currently own a couple of real estate businesses and property management, but I get bored easily so I moved on. My partner will most likely continue on with the businesses while I search for green pastures and so on and so forth....who knows. I may like it, I may not, but I'll eventually figure out what I want to be when I grow up, beside s a lover of good baccy and pipes that is.

In interviews I always showed up on time and they didn't. Every time, without fail, I would be asked to wait for up to an hour in a waiting room for his/her majesty to make an appearance . I always felt this was an underhanded way to tell me I wasn't worth anything. A way to diminish me. See? We can make you wait. Your time isn't worth anything. We are better than you. And we made you wait to show you that you need us - and we don't need you. Was this intentional? I really don't care. I always noticed it, remembered it and considered it rude and disrespectful. It was one of many, many reasons why I went out on my own. They would never do it to a valued client or a higher up. Yet they will do it to you. Today, they make the entire hiring experience inordinately difficult and time consuming. I had to go through barrages of tests, multiple interviews to be "judged", lunches and dinners. It was like an equivalent of a CIA background investigation into my resume, education, experience etc. They could decide up until the last interview for any reason whatsoever to say "no" and I would never, ever be compensated for my time invested. It's wrong to put people through this. When people go through all that B.S., they never want to again. And from what I hear - it's gotten even worse. I once had a job interview, I will never forget it. They has me sign an NDA saying I would keep the interview confidential. I was called into a conference room with people sitting with very serious looks on their faces. I was thinking am I here to get interviewed or be scolded? I sit down. They said we know who you are and we would like to hire you right away. Do you still have your old account and when can you start? I was quite taken aback. I was 27-28 at the time and they were offering 80k per year plus benefits healthcare matching 401k with no salary resistance.
Rather than accept, I was relaxed and began to ask questions. Finally they told me - we have a guy here who has been working here 33 years covered under a contract associated under the original owners when A__ L______ I_________ Inc was aquired. He is less than 2 years from collecting half pay full pensions and retirement. We have been speaking with our corporate attorney's. We can fire him up to one year before his retirement. We are looking to train a younger professional "go-getter" to assume his position. You would work under him for 6 months and take over his responsibilities at that time. This is not to leave this room. That is why we had you sign the NDA as a condition of this interview. We need your answer because we need to move on this quick. In other words, these sons of bitches .... they wanted to fire a loyal dedicated employee who had been with this company since it was founded, stayed with the company, signed a contract with the original owners that carried through, and after 30+ years they wanted to can him so they could cut off his pension the CFO told the district manager his pension was coming out of his local quarterlies (which affect their commissions) and would thus affect his salary. I was incensed to hear this. I did not accept the position. These were the same people working with this guy every day in the office. Smiling, saying hello, talking about the weekend, telling jokes, asking about his family etc and here they are in a conference room ... secretly plotting behind his back to can this poor older gentlemen. I wanted to tell him so bad but I signed an NDA and would have risked legal action. That interview really stands out. It was one of many reasons I left the corporate rat race. So I guess I should thank them for helping me along. People said I was stupid for turning it down. "who cares what happens to him - its not your fault" "Business is business" "they will just find someone else" "It's dog eat dog today get used to it" "you should have taken the position" "you are an idiot" Bla Bla bla. The bottom line is if they did it to him - they would do it to me. Some of the older people, or baby boomers may never have had to go through any of this back in America's glory days; when people had a code of honor. Consider yourselves fortunate.

It's shocking that a company would do that, michael. You made the right call.
