That is extreme! Always wet down the grass/weeds under the BBQ particularly when using mesquite. Stuff sparks like crazy...beautiful at night.
Morning, Josh!

Most of us don't live in an incendiary landscape. I would have a hard time keeping hydrogen lit in my backyard.

When I was a kid we used to tie newspaper to a long stick and burn their nests from the house eves. Now they got Industrial Aqua Net spray those wasps look cool stuck in place. We also used to burn ant hills with good ol gasoline and that's how I learned to keep the gas can at least 15 feet away from the burn.

I never have a problem with wasps, 20ft can usually take care of any problems.

What an idiot! Instead of jeopardizing my neighbors hay barn and home, I find that this is a very useful and effective product: www.maggiesfarmproducts.com/details.php?prodId=52Although, I guess torching a hornets nest with a flame-thrower can be fun too

I just wait for a cool morning and then scrape the nest off and administer repeated applications of the bottom side of my shoe. Mark, thanks for the link to that product. That will give me a better option for the higher nests. Looks safer and less messy for the paint on the house too.

Haha Don!
We run into them at work ALL the time.
Not too long ago I thought I had the "stream" spray and it was the fog. Had a bunch of very angry wasps hot on my arse. I threw that can in the trash to avoid further mistakes.
Normally I knock their nests down, they leave after that.

I make a wasp trap with some honey and jam inside the bottom half of a 2l coke bottle cut in two. The other half is turned upside down and taped to the bottom half. That keeps them away. Edit: Here's an example...

I got curious about what they eat and was just reading that they prey on caterpillars and other garden pests. I have always eliminated them upon finding nests because they can put one of my sons into shock if he gets stung. And they have sorely abused me over the years.

... Love the "Asshole with Wings..." Your welcome Don. This product is very effective. When I take out a nest, I'm up early before sunrise on a cool morning. I get within 12' of the nest and simply unload until the nest is all white with foam. The little A-holes fall out, are paralyzed, and expire. Haven't experienced any staining issues as well with the house paint or decking. Any residual is usually washed away after an hour or so...

I leave them alone and they do the same. Soon, it will be cold enough they go away and then I remove their nest/hive.
I have a nice ant mound forming in the yard. I admire their effort brining in sand grains one at a time. If I need a small supply of sand, there it is for me. Nice and clean. The Navajo use those mounds for their sand paintings. If I need to eliminate a mound, covering it with diatimaous earth works well. I have also used Portland Cement. It desicates and suffocates them. Since the cement is not mixed with aggregate it does not harden and can just be broken back into fine dust.

I keep a bag of diatomaceous earth around. Dries bugs up in no time and it's natural.
