I'm guilty of not ever "liking" a post...cause I didn't know what it was. For the most part I like pretty much like all the comments with the exception of someone jumping on someone else unnecessarily. That is not what this oasis is about...If I don't like something, I pretty much keep it to myself and try to ignore the commentor. Big plus 1 ^^^^^^^^ if I read a thread and like what I read I try to always hit the “ like “ tab on that thread. If I feel for some odd reason a member is NOT acting in a manner he or she should I stay completely clear of that thread......guess it’s just me! I’ve learned this also from being a member of other forums in the past.

Agree with most of what's been said so far. Just thinking, though, maybe we should have a dislike button to let fellow members know when we don't like what they've said! ...not a bad idea, Roy! ...of course, we'd all end up barking at each other, and our little oasis would be no more... Woof Woof Martin!

Truthfully......and some may not like what I'm about to say but, I like it because sometimes its just easier to click and show you like a post then to quote or just reply to one agreeing on the subject. If I posted every time just to agree or say thank you my post count would most likely be triple what it is and I don't want to become a PRO Member, I don't even like the sound of PRO much less want to be called one or have it hovering above me.

Doesn’t PRO mean you get paid for every post you make? Just like sports!

By the end of the night, after many beers, and some smelly green stuff, I came up with the brilliant idea to play a game. You had to say two nice things about someone else, and one bad thing. It went downhill FAST. So, I can attest to a "dislike" button causing a schism among parties, and why no one emplyoys them on social media.

Well, averaging 1 post per day it'll take me two years to get there and when I do, I think I'll have a talk with Mr. Sparks to see what we can do to eliminate that for me. I'm sure no one will mind me just staying a senior, which I am anyway.

That would not be a good idea. I've seen it done on a couple on forums, and the anger it caused was disruptive to say the least. it's too negative, and creates ill feelings.

I agree that a dislike button would take away the harmony of the place.
However, when someone posts something sad, like the passing of a loved-one, I feel that a 'so sorry to hear that' button would be good, because when I hit the 'like' button, I don't want to give the impression that I like the fact that one's loved-one has passed, but I want to acknowledge the post and my show my sympathy.
In some instances, liking the post doesn't ALWAYS mean that I like the content of the post.

I also think "pro" status should be changed to "Old Salt" lol

All post counts should be moved to that ptofile of the username. No reason post counts need to be shown within the open forum,,,,just my .2 cents.

I have learned that newer members see those posts, and get an idea as to who to go to for help and advice. It also serves as an indicator for those who aren't members, but lurk. They see a decent number of veterans on a site, and they take it as a place worth being, and perhaps may join because of it. I was that way when I decided to join forums, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks like that.
Brothers of Briar did what you suggested, but they are now a very small forum, and it doesn't seem to matter there. In a bigger forum, I think it does matter. As some people are proud and/or sensitive about their post count, it's better to keep it as it is, in my opinion. Again, for some, it could be a sensitive issue, so why stir up anything?

When I'd just taken my pipes back out in February, I looked around at all the online resources I could find. Here, I saw a lot of experience, and people that had been here a long time. I originally signed up at Brothers of Briar, but noticed the activity was low, and didn't know who the senior members were. I looked at the pipes magazine forum, and just said "nope", too big, too much fuff. Here, I'm glad I get to see who's hit milestones, etc. It's the Goldilocks of pipe forums.

I would agree, except that we also have some new members who are greatly experienced, but because they're new, their post count doesn't reflect their experience...
...and then there's me.

Yes, and the newly minted experienced smokers who join will feel more at home with other experienced smokers, and likely willing to help the less experienced. That's a big plus.
As for you, well, we have many, many padded rooms to hold you in!

I am not sure I want to become a pro member. Too much responsibility.
I like to comment and I like to share, in the spirit of a bunch of us handing out at a picnic table smoking and yakin' and trying each other's tobacco.
I am very skeptical about valuing what I think. (If you were a client of my business that would be different. You would be paying me for what I know, not what I think.)
I think I'll load up a pipe of Blonde, as I finish the War Horse churchwarden.

I click the "like" button to acknowledge the post. Mostly, I agree with or support the comments made. If a statement is made which I disagree with or do not understand I post a comment or question.
A "Dislike" button is not helpful for the reasons others have pointed out.

If there was a "Neutral" button its use could likely be perceived as negative-leaning or perhaps in disagreement with or even apathetic to a poster's held belief or opinion, as in "I couldn't care less"; so in that vein only one step further I would think that a "Dislike" button would push fair-to-good relations over the edge and southward. Just overthinking a button...
