Hi I know this topic comes up from time to time in many forums. Still it would be nice to have one thread where we pull our collective knowledge to help each other date tobacco tins;a place to put forward and respectfully correct information. For now I will start with two links; A. 2010-present Dunhill Tin Codes: www.smokingpipes.com/smokingpipesblog/single.cfm/post/how-date-dunhill-tobaccoB. December 1995- present Samuel Gawith Tin Codes: www.smokingpipes.com/smokingpipesblog/single.cfm/post/you-can-now-date-your-gawith-tobaccos Gawith date codes it's tins with a 5 digit number (typically printed on a clear sticker found on the side or back of the tin),the first 2 digits for the day and the last 3 digits for the number of months from December 1995 (including December which has to be accounted for in the calculation). PS Personally I date every tobacco with an arrival time and note the date of manufacture as well, that is if I can find or decode the manufacturer's date.

I'm kinda wondering how a 25yo young man comes up with this great stuff?

When there is no code to discern, all we have are subtle differences to help us determine a general age. Sometimes it's the type of tin, label and/or statement changes that can help one get a general idea of these tins' age, like with Rattray. Do you have any thoughts on blends like this?
PS Props to antb for adding a few solid links... I have a few more tricks up my sleeve, though I hope others will add to this thread before I do.
MacBaren (younger tins), C&D, GL Pease etc typically have simple date statements on the back label or stamped on the bottom of their tins. This is commonly known but for thoroughness sake I have added the information.

Good to hear from you... I have McClelland tins (as do others) that do not fit the pattern mmddyy. A quick Google search also appears to confirm the Blend/Batch/Year code as well. Maybe the code you see only appears to match mmddyy (I have McClelland tins that are marked in a way that appears to be mmddyy. As some other McClelland tins did not,I looked to the forums and found the answer above.)? However as I do not know if the code changed or if different codes were applied to different blends etc., I stand ready to be corrected. Let's see if anyone else might have something to say on the subject. It is better to be 100% on such things, either way it goes. PS All my C&D tins are stamped with the date going back 15 years or so. However,I do believe some have confused other numbers for a date stamp. If one looks carefully, assuming it has not been displaced, it should be there (typically on the tin's bottom).

Are you causing havoc in other forums too? This thread is meant to help each of us determine a tin's age from tin codes, tin shapes/sizes, labels etc. . In order to accomplish this task a bit of research is needed. This can involve looking at forums, articles, books etc. to uncover information. By working together with other folks on this forum, I hope we can confirm, add, correct or modify anything said to improve our mutual understanding. PS Legend Lover there are many forum subjects that are pretty light and benign. I have fun during those occasions. 😁

I think that example tin date would have been 11/20/2017 (324 or day number of the year 2017). 365 - 324 = 41, and if you backtrack 41 days from 12/31/2017, you should hit the date of 11/20/2017 (I think)… trailboss Thanks for sharing Charlie...

There are no codes on tins here certainly nothing that can use to properly date them. So I mark them the day they were purchased.

Can the Sam Gawith boxes (250 g) (not tins) be dated?

I do not know, though there might be a code from the company stamped on the package. If there is, then the company might be willing to tell you what the code means. If you find out, please come back to the thread and post your results.
Does anyone have anything to add to the entries above?

Threadsuurection!
While searching out dates for some Rattray’s tins, it seemed that there wasn’t much info until I ran across this guy. A handy feature is if you look under his notes, the bookmarked location for different brands are bookmarked so you don’t have to wade through the whole video.
