I like GBDs, but I've found that I needed to be very careful shopping for them as I found them to be a very unpredictable product. These three are top of the line pre-1980 and have proved to be fine smokers. GBD 9491 Pedigree billiard (pre-1980) GBD Pedigree 2541 canadian GBD Pedigree 'The Pickwick' stackish billiard (pre-1980).

Nice selection of GBDs. Particularly the first with the square shank.

Like the Savinelli's, I've had a lot of these over the last 35 years. They come and go, I enjoy them and get tired of them, but never had one smoke bad. So currently these are the three I have. From the top: Small Speciale canted bulldog, International straight pot, and a Prehistoric square shank billiard with a perspex stem.

This is a very old post from another site and the only current one of my smoking the one and only GBD I own. At one point I had given up smoking altogether, gave away my pipe collection and stopped cigarettes for 8 years. Then during a rather difficult stage in my apprenticeship the stress was quite high and I started with cigarettes again and finally purchased my first pipe, a GBD Prehistoric in an Apple shape with brass accents. Keeping it smokey with Mac Baren Dark Twist Roll Cake. banjo

I agree. I stay away from the post 1980’s era. The old ones smoke like a dream though. There is a new model named “Baronet” that are NOS sandblasted stummels from the 1970’s. I’ve yet to see any reviews from this line up. Gorgeous Pedigree’s.

In addition to the obviously lovely grain and finish, I really love the inward-tilting rim on this. Not a common feature in the GBD shape catalogue.

I've got some post-1980, firmly-Cadogan-ized GBDs, and while they are indeed not made to the pre-1980 standard, they still smoke very well. Ugly pipes, sometimes with poor stains, but they have correct drilling, hand-cut stems, etc. If you want a handsome GBD, pre-1980 is a must. If you just want a good-smoking pipe, the cheaper latter-day products are still pretty consistent about engineering.

smellthehatfirstNot to say a post-1980 model is a complete pile. They used the old leftover supplies for an unknown period of time. I’ve seen some really nice hallmarked spigots from the 80’s. The quality is hit and miss after the transition. I have a couple later model examples that are keepers.

trailbossGLP has a most coveted GBD collection. I’ve visited that page numerous times. The other pieces pages on his site are worth checking out as well.

The GBD Authors are getting a pretty penny these days for resale. Very much like the look of them. This was one from Greg's collection that really caught my eye.

The 9242. one of my all time favorite shapes. I actually fine tuned my finishing process for my old Brit woods to get that matte gloss look from the GLP collection. I like a high gloss finish on some pipes, but a matte gloss finish on older British pipes looks right proper.
