johnThat’s a beaut. Another gorgeous example of the subtle, classy and elegant shapes from GBD. The proportion and profile is just perfect.

2 GBD pipes I’ve not smoked in years. Still in storage containers. The picture was on one of my cloud services.

Top is a GBD Seventy Six, bottom is a GBD New Standard
If I'm not mistaken the bottom is a 9456. A shape I just can't get enough of, for some reason.
I've got three so far and I'm fond of all three of them. They all make it into my regular rotation.

I have a meager collection of three GBD's two which were heavily smoked by the previous owner, one of them has a repair band....they smoke everything wonderfully and it shows. When you buy 3 pipes of the same brand and two of them dependably smoke like a trusty Santa Fe Locomotive, that is saying something. I do have one that is worth posting mentioned in my diamonds in the rough thread (the matching brass colored rondele is washed out in the pic), and I am hoping it does as well...getting ready to load it up with some 4 year old MacBaren Scottish mixture. I am going to start culling the herd, and get some more GBD's.

That one isn’t the one with the repair band, brass? bands are part of the OEM for GBD Garland’s.
The repaired GBD has a nickel band...
Thanks... it is snazzy!

Another example of subtle elegance that classic GBD’s exhibited. The simple straight billiard may not be the most exciting shape, but when it’s done right, there’s no denying it. I know it’s weird to get this enthusiastic about a billiard... lol.

My ~$10 purchase limit applied to the GBD-Comoy era. These pipes were produced after GBD and Comoy merged, beginning in the early 1980s. They are stamped GBD and have similar markings except they do not have the metal GBD rondelle (Obscured with some of the pictured pipes.). I only own a few GBD-Comoy era pipes. PS The rondelle appeared in the late 1920s and remains one of the key features folks look for to distinguish between GBD & GBD- Comoy era pipes.
1990s and 2000s GBDs have the rondelle again, but it looks different. There's little danger of mistaking a later GBD for a pre-1980.
Comoy's, GBD, BBB, Loewe & Co, Orlik, and Kaywoodie London had the same owner for many, many years before consolidation -- Oppenheimer / Cadogan. When times were good, Cadogan was happy to operate all of the old pipe factories, expanding them repeatedly to meet demand. After the pipe business slackened in the 1970s, every brand's production was consolidated at the then-new Orlik factory in Southend-on-Sea. The factory opened in 1980. Every Cadogan brand suffered a slide in quality after 1980.
Not all of the Southend pipes are poorly made. Just the average quality isn't what it was. Pipes that previously would have been seconds or rejects were stamped with once-noble brands and sent out the door.
Post-consolidation pipes are not as collectible, but they are still distinctive, English shapes, and they're always properly drilled. Some have hand-cut stems. If you want a screaming deal on a GBD or a Comoy's, post-1980 is a way to get a heck of a pipe for very little money.
I use the term Comoy-GBD era or pre1980s GBD pipes etc. to denote a change in direction for GBD pipes. These terms are used by other collectors without the need to go into detail about all the specifics of the companies history. History that can be found in pipedia and other sources. Yes I did forget about the very recent GBD pipes that have the rondelle. They are far fewer in number, not often seen on eBay etc. and have rondelles that differ from their predecessors. As such they are but a minor nuisance and are not key in determining how I look at GBD pipes. I agree that there are decent smokers out there from the Comoy-GBD period. They also come cheap. However speaking as a collector, I typically avoid them unless the shape appeals to me on some level.
