"Folks taking what the next guy said instead of applying reason is a universal trait across"
Yes I generally agree. Some disciplines require the use of reason more than others and we all fall into the follow the herd trap from time to time. Still trusted colleagues and contributors are always welcome. They typically also have good things to bring to the table.๐
When I can, I try to find and study the source materials or come as close as possible, reading, seeing and/or listening to resources as necessary. This goes hand in hand with exploring good outside analysis and other information that expounds and continues the journey. Many things go into good reasoning and many folks move with the flow, we all have felt and/or swam in each stream. One night say the choice(s) we make is(are) determined by or a reflection of how awake we are. P. D. Ouspensky, the Russian mystic, spoke on this topic in a broader albeit brief way, I believe*, in his book"The Psychology of Manโs Possible Evolution". There are many other books on the topic, though oddly enough the above work comes to mind.๐
* I read it so long ago that I need to check my information to be sure.
PS I would not discount other's experiences either or say we all do not have our moments of cognitive black out.๐ We are human. Knowing my imperfections, victories, follies etc. , through it all, I am reminded to be humble and considerate among other things. And for the same reason, being human, I fail and have to learn or remind myself again who I am and who I can be ....experience can be a harsh but necessary mistress.

I'm quite enthusiastic about experiments.
I just don't have the tools to make a go of it myself.

Thermodynamics in gasses are tough to predict, and the thermodynamics of smoke through a stem are even worse. While you would expect a linear correlation between surface area and temperature change it is in reality exponential. Gas temp exchange is tough to predict because of the number of variables in every measurement.

that I look ridiculous with one hanging outa my mouth. Not worried about making a fashion statement but, I would like to look a little intelligent no matter what reality really is. On looking ridiculous... It is like a lot of things, it takes confidence. If you think it looks ridiculous then you will do it sheepishly like "please don't think I look ridiculous" and that attitude will be noticed. Noticed more than the pipe itself. I kind of think that the anti-pipe smokers are propped up by the anti-smoking culture. They don't have much individual courage. You have to be a lion, not a zebra. Individual courage scares them. I kind of think you have to look at them piteously. Imagine licking your finger and putting in the air to see which way the wind blows, checking with others how to be in the world. Its like wearing a cowboy hat. Or cowboy boots. Man, you just have to cowboy up. It takes intestinal fortitude but ultimately it is a grand life. You put it in their face. (I even have a western hard hat for my job.) I remember in high school, for a season, it was cool in some communities to roll up on leg of your pants. I thought it was ridiculous. But here is this big guy, wearing white socks with his white converse sneakers, and one pant leg rolled 3/4 the way up the knee. And walking with such confidence, like "I not only belong here, but I don't ask your permission for it." It was powerful. I don't know. Its very complicated, and there are boundaries everywhere, that are negotiated socially and inter-personally, and if you don't want to be "left out" you have to portray yourself and safe and one of the bunch. My feeling is, however, that if one is going to smoke anyway, be the lion. No apologies.

I really admire your "go big or go home" confidence statement and that you smoke yours in the open. I've always wanted a true calabash, African gourd meerschaum bowl. Even currently have one marked on eBay that's around $300 that I'd love to have. Problem is I'm so put off by the darn Sherlock Holmes thing. sure as heck not going to walk down main street with it lol. I'd only smoke it when I was by myself. . Couldn't bear hearing all the dear Watson s... The detractors would be, secretly, jealous of your courage. When I was a sprite I liked watching Daniel Boone starring Fess Parker. I wanted coon skin cap. A real one. A lot of kids liked Daniel Boone. But when I finally got the cap, I sure did get a lot of abuse for it at school. And I thought to myself "where are all the kids who like Daniel Boone?" I just figured they were the same ones harassing me, just jealous.

Well, I can tell ya one thing, I won't be wearing my britches hang'en off my arse or shorts that are 4 sizes to big wearing a back-arse-wards ball cap on my head because sir, that is ridiculous and in my day we'd all laugh ya outta town. No matter how one looks at it, some things are just plain ridiculous and if someone wants to be brainwashed into to thinking there not that's just fine.......gives us all something to laugh about. As far as me thinking a churchwarden looks silly in my mouth I'm sure that's just me but, in this case it's me that counts.

Having the courage to look different includes the courage to not wear your pants hanging down just because everyone else is. Not wearing a ball cap backwards in order to comply with fashion. How much are we each willing to do in order to fit in is something each of us solves for ourselves. Also, how much we are willing to avoid in order to fit in. And sometimes one is just ahead of the times. In high school so many years ago I spent a year carrying my books around in a military surplus backpack. I was the only one, and now everyone is back packing it.

While you would expect a linear correlation between surface area and temperature change it is in reality exponential. Gas temp exchange is tough to predict because of the number of variables in every measurement. We're passing it through an insulator, though. Even if the exchange rate goes up exponentially, that exponential factor times a very, very small constant thermal conductivity can still be a very small number at the end.
