When you see something online or on a forum be very careful. Does your poster show all sides and all angles of the pipe? Does he fail to show the manufacturer logo with the same background as the other pictures? Does he fail to show the button or the stem from both sides? Does he quote one price one day then when you are ready to buy changes the price? Does he stall on using pay pal saying he has a problem with his account and will have it worked out in a few days? Then when you get back he says he wasn’t able to work it out but will take a check or credit card? Again did the price change or is the shipping cost out of line? Fortunately most pipe people are honest, but some are not.
I recently purchased a pipe thinking it was a certain brand as it was listed. Only to find out it was a no name knockoff. And this past week I had the “pay pal” stall used. Buyer beware.

Excellent advice, it’s been tried on me twice on eBay in the past few years. Unless I know the seller personally I’d never purchase a pipe on eBay without using PayPal. “ My Mama raised no fool “!

Excellent advice and worth highlighting.
I've never experienced that before, but I did buy a pipe and it ended up being a miniature. That was annoying.
I've learned to pay attention to scale, if possible.

It ain't what it used to be. To be honest, I experienced a recent issue with Pay Pal and am done with them as a result. I've read of others having Pay Pal issues as well, especially on international transactions. I did business with them for approximately two decades without a glitch for the most part but they seem less reliable these days.
On the pipe side, I've experienced some flawless estate transactions which were outstanding; however, my negative experiences resulted primarily from unlisted bowl spidering, ill advised modifications and photo enhancements.
Stick to your guns on estates over the internet. I totally get it why a seller just giving away a pipe wouldn't offer returns or a buyer would take a shot in the dark on a lark but no return offered is normally a red flag on this end. Most importantly, beer and estate parts are the surest road to disaster over the Internet.
Overall, the estate experience was a lot of fun in which I leaned a great deal about pipes; nevertheless, it's lost its luster and I'm somewhat relieved it's over for me.

Excellent advice. I recently purchased a pipe on eBay from a respected seller, ended up the stem had been repaired with one of those nylon or plastic push-in tenons some time back. It was quite loose fitting. The ad stated, “Cleaned and Sanitized”, if true, the stem repair was not declared. My lesson? Ask questions, no matter the seller.

Thankfully, I never bid above about £8 so if I bought a lemon it wasn't THAT sour.

You should try and find some Comoy Monogram pipes....I had 2 many years back...they were perfect...and small. I think they were aiming at the ladies market...don't know what happened to mine...fell down the rabbit hole along with many other fabulous pipes that I used to have. Funny, I managed to keep a number of Comoys from the 60's...enjoyed them for a while and gave most of them to AJ as I knew he would enjoy them as much as I had...most were Traditions with a Grand Slam and a Blue Riband to boot. He told me he smokes them and enjoys them immensely...that is what I wanted to hear. I had them for 50 years, and I hope he smokes them for another 50 years.

Always good to be careful when you are buying anything. I have bought over a hundred pipes on ebay, and the only issues I have had are when I didn't read all of the description and look carefully at all the pics. The few problems I have protested have been taken care of to my satisfaction.

One of my first Ebay purchases was a trio of pipes, one of them had a cracked bowl. I tried to replicate his picture taking so as to obscure the crack...it took a lot of doing. And of course he set it up as no returns allowed. Another Viking pipe with varnish had a blister on the backside that looked like it was filled with puss.
In that case, when I sent Ebay the pic, they agreed, and I got my money back.
He relished them, and it appeared that someone got suckered.

I bought one with a cleverly disguised burn through. Filled full of ash and clever lightning. Wasn't very pleased but wasnt out a whole lot of money either.
My last project pipes I bought, the seller noted every flaw in each one of them. He was right, but so far they've all been fixable. I have about 4 more to go. Honesty in "bad" things goes a long way with me. He has some nice estates and when I'm back looking for some, I'll check his listings first.

This has happened to me at least twice:
Seller posts a listing with a pipe in a pipe box and the listing title is for the brand of pipe that is printed on the box. Pictures are kind of sketchy, so I can't quite read the stampings on the pipe. I buy the pipe and get a different pipe that was listed in the title. Yes, I know, I shouldn't have bought it unless I could read the nomenclature on the pipe. This is frustrating and Ebay is quick to force a refund in cases like this. It would seem to me that even if someone is not a pipe expert that they could read the name stamped into the pipe shank and tell that it is not the same as what is on their pipe box.
