People like Richard Cranium irk me. I frequently come across people like him. They know what’s best for everyone else.
Agree. I think the problem is when people like this have the power and force of law, courts, government etc. to impose their will on others.
Some people "get off" on controlling other people. A type of psychological disorder.
I moved into a Condominium. Most of the residents are over 65. From New York, Boston, NJ, the NE etc. They all move to Florida. I don't know why. But some literally have nothing better to do than observe everything others are doing, and complain about it or comment on something your doing and tell you what you should be doing. I am nice and polite but mostly keep to myself and do not bother anyone - but they have already complained about:
1) Warming up the car engine too long. Anything over 60 seconds - HOA fine.
2) Smoking on the balcony - HOA fine.
3) Doing mechanical work on my car - HOA fine 4) Using the rec room after 11:00pm - HOA fine 5) Driving out the wrong door - HOA fine 6) Using pool after hours -HOA fine 7) Walking on grass - HOA fine
They seem to live for this stuff. They even have monthly "meetings" to determine what residents "can" and "can't" do. Posting notices in the elevator or on peoples doors etc.
I don't understand why anyone would pay $250-800 month in HOA dues for this. I guess if you're over 65 and from the Northeast and want to live around other 65+ age people from the Northeast and get into bickerings meetings paperwork and fines and pay HOA dues every month FL condos are where the fun is at.
I am getting out of here as soon as my lease ends. Going back to LA. I will never lease in another HOA community again.

Allot of people seem to derive a sense of group think virtue or some kind of self-righteousness by automatically jumping on the anti-smoking train to automatically condemn smoking.
I was chased out of the WestGate Casino is Las Vegas after they put a smoking ban on their sports book and sports book bar. I was at the back in between the bar and pool table. I light up my pipe, and started puffing away. Suddenly - a chorus of 3-4 tables of people started yelling at me to "put it out" "no smoking here" "not allowed" "go outside". A chorus of voices from these tables (they obviously all knew each other and reserved these tables) that I was not allowed to smoke in here. I think they thought I was smoking dope because they were all murmuring and staring at me before yelling. The tones of their voice sounded like they thought they were doing something "good" and I was doing something "bad". I did not like it. I walked out of the Sports book and finished outside with no further problems. Never been back. That place will never get my business again.
Help me understand something, if you would indulge me please... why did you decide to smoke in a place where smoking was banned? Was the response you received not simply because you were smoking in a banned place? All bars have a smoking ban in Ireland. If someone started smoking a pipe in a bar here they'd get the same response, because there's a ban on smoking in bars.

Although I live near to Vegas, I only go once a year... smoking is still so accepted, that I wouldn’t think about going anywhere and being confronted.
As far as HOA’s, I live in one and it functions really well, they just give you a reminder that your weeds need attention, and you cannot paint your house purple, that looks like a poor drunk lives next door. Our HOA fees are only $80.00 every 3 months. And they are pretty conservative in keeping the common areas nice without trying to build things that don’t need building. Most decent people just want to live their lives, control freaks gravitate towards getting themselves on something like an HOA board to build themselves up... fortunately for now that doesn’t take place where I live.
Florida is called “God’s waiting room” for a reason...a bunch of old crabby farts in your situation that think making hell for everyone, somehow ushers their entrance into heaven.
Given your experience, I get it.

Andy from Boston had an excellent reply to mister star wars.... Mine was a bit too harsh for them to post I reckon. That’s me. I just can’t resist an opportunity to put down an asshat. Nicely done! AndyFromBoston 2 days ago Perhaps if Mr. Stawar got out his old pipe and spent an hour with it on the porch he would settle down enough to stop judging others over a bit of harmless fun like a slow smoking contest. Pipe smoking carries about 10% of the cancer risk that cigarette smoking does, because the smoke is not inhaled and good pipe tobacco is not made with artificial additives. It is a fine way to relax, and an evening ritual with a book, a pipe and a drink can be excellent therapy for the stress that is surely just as hazardous for a man of his age. While 20 cigars a day could certainly cause health risks it is extremely unusual to find anybody who is even capable of staying awake long enough to smoke that much, considering it takes an hour or two to smoke a cigar.

They never raised the HOA fee in 20 years? Not sure what they were originally. The house was built in’97, I moved in in 2005. There is a cap on raising the fees, and rarely do the HOA members choose to do so. I live in a politically pretty conservative town, and I think that mindset guides the people on the HOA board, and pretty much a live and let live attitude without looking the other way when a turdball thinks that they need to buck societal norms. Having said that, my subdivision fees are far less than most others in surrounding communities.

There’s no one so radical and pushy, as a convert. They think they now see ‘The Truth’, and they are determined to spread it.
Frankly, I don’t care what the guy thinks or writes.
A recent government study (sorry I don’t recall the particular agency) found no significant impact on health with ‘moderate’ cigar smoking. ‘Moderate’ defined as one cigar per day. Of course, a cigar isn’t a pipe. Given the relatively tiny population of tobacco pipe smokers today , no one has bothered to do a recent study on pipe smoking that I am aware of. A cigar isn’t a pipe, but it isn’t a cigarette either. The study didn’t examine usage rates greater than one cigar per day.
Given my very modest volume of cigar & pipe smoking, I’m not concerned. These activities are a pleasure which I find relaxing. Are there Absolutely Zero risks? Of course not. But there are risks getting into your car or in having sex, and I don’t intend to give up either of those either. Getting out of bed in the morning is a risk.

The folks who volunteer to work in the HOA tend to be busybodies -- that's what motivated. Worse, you're a renter. There's nothing in the world that condo owners hate more than a renter in their complex. Boy howdy is that a bottomless source of spite.

True. But HUD statistics say most of these owners are mortgaged. So they are debtors. Renting reflects what people can actually afford to pay. My parents are always after me to stop renting and get a mortgage. They say get a mortgage your throwing your money away. But I'm not interested in being in debt for 30-40 years and I want to live in a luxury condo or big house. The building I'm in now is the worst cheapest building I've ever lived in. I spoke to my attorney yesterday and he said after this letter they can evict you "at will" and "for cause" which means at will. They can just say you did something and evict you. The attorney reinforced everything I said on here about HOA's.
So they can put an eviction on my credit if I don't hurry up and leave which would block me from renting at other luxury condos and homes. Then I would have to sue and pay more $$$$$ to attorney's.
I'm wondering if I should just put my vanity aside and buy a "normal" house with cash instead of renting and saving for McMansion. I just dont want to live in a "normal" house. I want to have a nice big house with at least 6 bedrooms that reflects my hard work. And right now I keep saving and the RE prices outpace my savings. I've been waiting for the RE market to go down for 12 years now and it never has. And now they say the RE prices are back up to 2006 RE bubble levels.

Just like my guns, they will have to pry my pipe from my cold dead hands. I know what is bad and good for me as I am 47 years old. My pipe is one of my great enjoyments in life. I hate to say but this is why I am trying hard to build my cellar up now. I can only imagine what tin prices will be in the years to come not to mention the regulations involved.

Two years ago, we visited friends in Arizona. We went to a casino in Prescott and one in Payson. Both has ashtrays right next to every slot machine.. That is my kind of place.

And Jim Fixx, the famous runner, died of a heart attack at a fairly young age while running. Maybe he was smoking exhaust fumes.

My first job was working on a golf course and all the stuff we sprayed without respirators or skin protection and had one chemical that was loaded with mercury, lots of nice things I inhaled there. I then went through a series of jobs in factories as maintenance and all the grinding of lead based paint, welding fumes and cleaning chemicals not to mention just trying to avoid getting killed by machinery. I did a long stint in an electro and electrostatic painting facility and the fumes from baking the paint on not to mention the caustic solutions and cleaners were pretty awful. I'm pretty sure I have inhaled. ingested and absorbed way worse things than cigarette and pipe tobacco smoke.

He sounds like someone converted from the pipe, and so, like cigarette smokers weaned from the cigarette, is vociferous in his arguments against. For me, I acknowledge pipe smoking carries a mild risk, but there are so many risks in life, many beyond our control, that a minor risk for a such pleasure as pipe smoking brings, is worth it to me.

I have stood in a rice field while crop duster sprayed on rice and me luckily I left S Asia before they sprayed DDT Still it got my good buddy from Oklahoma. Working at the Exxon Chemical plant I washed my hand at a benzene pump, via bleeder valve, how strong was it, we put 2 paint brushes hard as a rock, in a bucket with benzene, 2 days later good as new. Guage glass blew out covered me totally in Sponge oil, noted for its carsengens, got home took off clothes in back yard, boots too, my chow dog never chewed on those boots. Handled almost every type of bad chemicals, explovies while hot shoting with my UD Truck. Now my pipe and Tobbaco at 75 gonna kill Me HaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHaaaaaaawwwwwww.!

The bad press for DDT has been proven false and the good has been forgotten, such as eradicating bed bugs during WWII peace talks. If we used DDT today the birds would still breed and how many people would we save from malaria, but no one wants to handle the PC football.

My father studied under one of the fellows who invented DDT. Guy was literally up to his elbows in the stuff for years, ate without wasting his hands, and lived to be 95. DDT is remarkably non-toxic to humans. You can literally cram fistfuls of it into your face and suffer no worse consequence than indigestion. The bad press for DDT has been proven false and the good has been forgotten, such as eradicating bed bugs during WWII peace talks. If we used DDT today the birds would still breed and how many people would we save from malaria, but no one wants to handle the PC football. DDT is still widely used in the tropics. They're exempt from the treaties that ostensibly "banned" it. Unfortunately, bed bugs and mosquitos are both highly resistant to DDT. It's no longer effective. Regardless of how you feel about the ecological damage, or whether you believe the ecological damage is even real, DDT just doesn't work the way it used to. The target insects aren't as susceptible as they once were.
