I posted a scathing reply to mister starwars...awaiting moderation, doubt it will be posted. He doesn't have an agenda, does he.....

After getting zero comments he might move to having a YouTube channel or a podcast.

Yeah..Ulysses S Grant smoked like a friggin chimney also and met the same fate...Dean Martin woke up drinking straight whiskey for the last 20 years of his life. This guy is a major douchebag...sad that he heads up a healthcare organization. I would like to find out about his drinking... risky sexual behavior.... Speedboats, motorcycles, off road vehicles? His diet...his face tells me that he might be eating too much.

My grandfather on my fathers side smoked a pipe for over 70 years. Made it to damn near 90 years old. My great grandfather smoked a pipe his whole life and lived to be 94.
My grandmother on my moms side, recently died from lung cancer. Never smoked a day in her life.
Life is ironic.
Drink kale smoothies and jog everyday. You’re still going to die.
I suppose virtue signaling makes miserable people feel better about themselves.
Me? I’m going to enjoy my short stay here on this planet.

Churchill ate meat, drank heavily and was a smoking machine
Hitler was a vegetarian, a teetotaler and did not smoke.
Coincidence?

My Moms Dad ( he was a miserable human being ) I never referred to him as my grandfather, but he smoked cigars and pipes from age 12, married a woman half his age and the SOB lived past 96. Smoke didn’t end up killing him, he dropped dead in the sack next to his young chippy chic...yup he died during the act of nooky. So, sex kills👍👍👍

Charlie, thanks for posting this... and really all the ones you dig up. I don't always comment on them as I fear getting wordy (no guffaws, please). I have to say I am not really fond of either of the two. Nice to know Bourbon, which is just as illegal as tobacco at a young age, is ok by him. As to Mr. Contest Winner, he could very well get my "Meh of the Year" award. Ronv69 taught me the meaning of the word "meh" so I honor him here. A bowl should last as long as you wish. Smoking for length of time seems a little odd to me. Most of my bowls finish less than a half hour. This morning I had my scrooge GBD filled and it lasted over an hour to a fine ash. And that was Captain Black Dark, if you will. Thing is, if need be I would have let it rest after 45 minutes. Oh, what I am really trying to say, but failing at as usual, this just seems like a lousy idea for a competition. Best pipe maybe. Best Blend, sure. I have no Tobacco Gods. My gurus here are people that can help me get better flavor, but I don't think I have ever asked a competitive question

People like Richard Cranium irk me. I frequently come across people like him. They know what’s best for everyone else. I’m a recovering alcoholic. For me, stopping drinking and soul searching has saved my life. It’s probably my most important accomplishment. I don’t say this lightly. I ran a marathon at 17, passed the bar exam on the first try, had great financial success (as well as failure) and am a dad (my favorite). Now that I’m sober, I can achieve anything (through hard work and determination). If I were still drinking, I would likely be in jail or dead. I say that with one hundred percent certainty. Abstinence from alcohol is what’s best for me. I don’t know what’s best for Richard Cranium or anyone else. It’s not my place, nor do I care and it’s certainly not my business. .

That column read to me like his fond reminiscence of pipe smoking, with a couple paragraphs of "DONT TAKE UP SMOKING" at the end
Just some cover-your-arse stuff.

Until today I didn't know Jeffersonville even had its own newspaper -- it is just across the river from Louisville, so I just assumed that the hoosiers took the Louisville paper.

ah, good ol' Jane Henley of the classic 2004 "Henley et al" pipe smoking study. academic.oup.com/jnci/article/96/11/853/2520796I am rusty, it's been a long time since my poring-over-tobacco-studies days, but the TL:DR version is this-- they ran a really well funded study that controlled for a lot of variables, found out that the more you smoke (and drink) the more you risk your health, and CONVERSELY the less you smoke and drink, the less you risk your health. I read the whole thing and felt that it more or less reinforced the '64 surgeon generals report. The hack job at the end was that they smushed all the stats together and averaged everything out. in other words, when they say "pipe smoking increases the risk of x,y,z,a,b,c smoking related diseases", the guy who smokes 20 pipes a day and drinks 10 or more whiskeys is considered the same as the guy who smoked 1 pipe a day and doesn't drink. This paragraph provides some insight into their motivations; "Comprehensively documenting the deleterious health effects of pipe smoking is important in countering efforts by the tobacco industry to promote pipes as a desirable alternative to cigarettes or cigars. The tobacco industry has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to create new markets by reviving interest in tobacco products that had appeared to have become obsolete, especially among youth and young adults. Two complementary approaches used to rekindle demand for products such as moist snuff, premium cigars, bidis, and hookah pipes are to minimize the adverse health consequences of these products by presenting them as a less hazardous alternative to cigarette smoking and to glamorize use by creating positive associations with celebrity, athleticism, success, and/or internationalism (47)." I rest my case. agenda driven, tampered with, etc. what you would expect.

Allot of these "healthcare organizations" and "human rights organizations" are privately funded tax free front groups with some other agenda. Good or bad.
But I am not interested in his opinion. I am interested in the facts. I noticed he doesn't cite the Surgeon Generals studies in the 1960's and 1980's.
He shows no proof, no charts, no lab studies. I understand smoking is dangerous but it's important to distinguish between cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco.

Allot of people seem to derive a sense of group think virtue or some kind of self-righteousness by automatically jumping on the anti-smoking train to automatically condemn smoking.
I was chased out of the WestGate Casino is Las Vegas after they put a smoking ban on their sports book and sports book bar. I was at the back in between the bar and pool table. I light up my pipe, and started puffing away. Suddenly - a chorus of 3-4 tables of people started yelling at me to "put it out" "no smoking here" "not allowed" "go outside". A chorus of voices from these tables (they obviously all knew each other and reserved these tables) that I was not allowed to smoke in here. I think they thought I was smoking dope because they were all murmuring and staring at me before yelling. The tones of their voice sounded like they thought they were doing something "good" and I was doing something "bad". I did not like it. I walked out of the Sports book and finished outside with no further problems. Never been back. That place will never get my business again.
