Ill put in a good word before Lonecoyote gets a chance, Edwards Algerian Briar is among the greats in my book, simple but great briar and craftsmanship.

IMO - Savinelli Punto Oro. What do you think? Excellent choice; however, at this point, I would be extremely selective on estates. You can't go wrong with a Tinsky.

Your post states Best bang for buck estate pipes. That takes in a lot of territory. Depends upon how and where you're looking for the bang. Sometimes a Dr. Grabow could be your best bang, other times maybe a Savinelli, GBD, Peterson, or who knows what! I think that I've done pretty well with mine over the years, but it takes a lot of time and patience. You simply need to be at the right place at the right time

Yeah, Edwards are a fine pipe. My choice would be GBD and Comoy, if you can get a pre-cadagon issue. Great wood, great grain, great stain. Can't go wrong with either of these 2 or 3 pipe brands.

IMO - Savinelli Punto Oro. What do you think? I just shopped for one recently and the prices have really gone up for the Punto Oros. One I bid on went for $200. I will agree that they are probably worth it. I have a half dozen or so Punto Oros and I have not considered selling any of them. Most estate pipes are going for too much on eBay, but there are still deals to be found. If you are looking for a great pipe then they are probably the best bet.

I just picked up a nice unsmoked GBD for $40. Estate Radice pipes are usually a good bargain.

I haven’t smoked a Savinelli I didn’t enjoy, so far all great smokers that are well crafted. I just wouldn’t spend $450.00 plus on one of their Signature Series pipes. You can’t beat a Savinelli Unfinished pipe for the price 👌👍👍👍

Got you all beat. It is the latest estate pipe you purchased. I prefer to keep mine close to the vest. They are hard enough to find as it is. So yeah, Savinelli - buy all of those.

I seen to be able to find estate Punto Oro for $50 or less. I think in that price range it's hard to beat them. My next step it to try estate BBB Own Make pipes. They also seem to go rather inexpensive.

BTW, I like PO's as well, I have 8 of 'em Edward's are definately at the top of the list for sure, but make sure they are pre '90s

Anyone know where the Punto Oro is in the Savinelli pecking order? All mine seem rather close to perfect. Not necessarily my very best smoking pipes, but close enough and uniformly great.

The top two lines are the Autographs for freehands and the Giublieo 'd Oro for standard shapes. The Punto Oro's are right below them. If I had to choose between a currently made Dunhill, I woul take a Giubieo or Punto over ANY of today's Dunhill's

Some of the English estate pipes that are seconds are real sleepers...Sasieni, Dunhill, Gbd seconds are incredible smokers that fly under the radar, and are incredible smokers.
Not to say that there aren't some great first's within them lines that are also are a great value.
I have been fortunate to find a bevy of pipes for in the $10.00 per price range, I have been incredibly fortunate in that regard....
I have an affinity for English pipes of yesteryear....I think that in that era, demand required that the pipes produced be of very good quality resulted in some fine factory pipes that we still enjoy to this day.

Many of the OLDER English made pipes used Algerian briar, which I much prefer over any new briar pipes.....JMHO

There is someone that sells Roads Towne, I think it is. He's in USA, but they are made in China. Got a beautiful Bulldoggie for about 20$, though many of his pipes went higher. He puts up several Mortas each week.
My best bang for my buck has been the EA Carey's. I know people may not want that system, but I got three pipes, different auctions, all totaled with shipping less than 50$. They smoke well for Aro lovers. I am keeping them for Aros
PS - A guy that used to be in this forum, rekamepip, sold estates on ebay. Seen Savs go for 40$. All of his pipes came clean and are good smokers

Punto Oros are quite good and can be had for less than $50. The top two here were at or below $50, and unsmoked.

Then again, after nearly thirty years of smoking a pipe, I find that cobs and high grades smoke nearly identical.

Very good assesment, I just picked up an old English pipe made of Algerian briar, 15 bucks! I have no doubt its a factory pipe but its a fine smoker. A good pipe can be had at $10.
