Ehrlich and Bertram are excellent American makes that generally go for peanuts. Bertram was known as the "American Dunhill", such was the quality of their pipes. Sasieni Mayfairs are fine smoking pipes. Arly Curtz' pipes go for very reasonable prices and are fine smokers.
The interesting thing about Algerian briar is that it was not held in high esteem by pipemakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was thought to be too soft and prone to cracking. That's one reason you see so many "no name" pipes made from Algerian briar. It was the cheap stuff. But pipemakers learned how to cure it and work it and learned to appreciate its smoking properties.
I suspect that the reason you don't see a lot of low quality pipes from the early 20th century is that they simply didn't hold up over time and wound up in the trash. Every market has its high and low end products.

Stanwells....made in Denmark... One of my better smokers and comfortable to boot is a Stanwell. I would not be afraid to try another one or two of theirs

I'm a fan of Butz-Choquin pipes; they are good smokers and well made. In particular, the Supermate is an exceptional pipe for the money. Almost all of the Savinellis that I've smoked were great smokers.

I've always thought that Stanwells looks great and I've only heard good things about them.
From personal experience, when it comes to the bang for buck (or pound, in my case), it has to be my Lorenzo Spitfire. It has been, hands down, the best smoking estate pipe that I have....
...so far.

On Chico's suggestion, I looked for what might be called the companion to the "Hidden gems ( pipe lines) within std pipe companies" thread. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/4639/hidden-gems-pipe-lines-companiesReading the initial intent of both threads, this group of posts was designed to be broad, more general(good pipes @ great prices...bang for the buck) while the other had a narrower focus (Nicer pipe lines within std companies that are under the radar..hidden gems (As a result they can be real good deals.)). Still both threads could prove useful and entertaining PS As suggestions/modifications/ adjustments occurred in the posts to follow, there are pipes mentioned that are common to each thread including those that are a union of the threads' initial visions.
