Has anyone tried rolling your tobacco into a kind of sausage shape and placing it in the pipe?
I've heard of some people doing this. I tried it this morning but it didn't work very well. I like experimenting.
Does it work for any of you?

Don't have any tobacco that would conform to those specs. Hmm...maybe flakes would do it but I prefer to rub out my flakes.

That sounds pretty decisive, AntB Yea, been there, tried that... Ahhh, so you were saying it didn't work rather than saying you hadn't tried it. Yea, didn't work for me either. You learn from your mistakes.... ...or you come here and learn first, before you make the mistakes.

Is this some odd version of the Frank method?

Ribbon cuts I just drop in and gently pack with thumb. Flakes I roll into a ball similar to Kiseru pipe smoking and jam into pipe. Topping with what falls off.

I've put cigar cutoffs into a pipe bowl and it smoked superbly. Since cigars are the epitome of rolled tobacco, I don't see why a well rolled pipe tobacco leaf blend wouldn't please... although something like a thin shag won't work nearly as well as tear-offs from whole leaf.
Tabac Manil Bouchons de Semois are rolled in this way to be smoked in our pipe.

Another posting I replied to not here! I often take coins or flakes and roll them into a football shape, leaves a void of air in the bowls bottom, I tease the top apart then press down, this works exceptionally well in the heat of summer for those finicky pipes that are like me and hate humidity. banjo

I've known people who swear by the air pocket method. A really tight ball wedged into the top 2/3 or the pipe. It never really worked well for me.
