So far this year my Esoterica haul has included two eight ounce bags of Penzance, two Margate, one Tibury, one Dunbar, one Brighton and one Woodbridge - I didn't pay Ebay prices for any of them. They all came from places like Cup O' Joes, Iwan Ries and Mars Cigars. Granted it took a little effort and one has to be at the right place at the right time. I got them all jarred last night.
I love light English. In the past calendar year I was also able to score five tins of Margate and eleven tins of Germain's King Charles which appear sneakily similar to my taste buds - Again none at EBay prices. Add to the kitty two tins of Germain's Royal Jersey Latakia Mixture, one Germain's Special Latakia flake, two Germain's 1820 and, although not English, two more tins of Tilbury.
Lest I forget a whopping haul of twelve tins of Smoker's Haven Best Blend, five Exotic and five more In Between, all made by J. F. Germain.
The only thing missing from the bucket list is Stonehaven; however, I don't necessarily search for it like others due to my preference for others. While I realize many consider it the Holy Grail, I simply prefer others and it's also admittedly been even less available than the ones I've mentioned.
Now to the point - I don't necessary believe Esoterica/Germain blends are over-rated. They deserve their reputations; however, I have no idea why anybody would pay EBay prices for any of these blends? Love of Penzance is well known; however, both G.L. Pease Quiet Nights and Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding are readily available, have the same complexity plus a dash of Perique which is a plus in my book and get me to the same place. Stonehaven? I actually prefer Solani 660 Silver Flake which is loosely from the same genre IMHO.
My journey down this deep rabbit hole was to set up for retirement, and hence, life - Mission Accomplished; nevertheless, the path I took regarding these was only one of thousands which can be taken to arrive at the same point and I was curious as to others' experiences, efforts and thoughts.
Smoke in good health friends.
