Yeah, so many of the pipes of yesteryear I reckon had to be marketable to the greater population since pipe smoking was so commonplace, back in the day.Had they turned out crap, they wouldn't be around long.

That's a stunning pipe. I've never heard a bad word about Savinelli.

I am a fan of Sunrise pipes, made by Comoy. Also have several of the Comoy's Guildhall pipes. All are good smokers.

Very nice pipe Charlie.......hope you light it up with your favorite tobacco when you retire and celebrate. Mine are Savinelli and Comoy’s Briarworks makes some fine production line pipes at very reasonable prices. Also never smoked a bad Morgan Bones Pipe.......needs to go back into my rotation one day!!

That’s a great looking pipe Charlie. Use it in good health (if you can bring yourself to smokie it).
I’ve smoked a good variety of brands these past 21+ years. I’ve never had any issues with my Savinelli’s.

That's a great pipe, Charlie. The rustication reminds me a bit of Jarl pipes. Most every factory pipe I've had has been a decent smoker. Stanwell and Savinelli get mentioned a lot and for good reason. It's interesting to hear the less commonly discussed makers. I'll throw Philip Trypis pipes into the hat as an above average factory pipe. The top three are Trypis pipes and the bottom is my trusty Savinelli 811KS.

As far as an "everyman" pipe you can't beat the pipes made in the US by Edward's back in the late 60s, thru the late '70s. Made from oil cured Algerian briar, they all had a sweetness smoking wise right from the start and only got better. My fave Edward's that I smoke almost daily is the first one I , a 713-L Apple with tapered fishtail bit that I got back in '71. It started out that lovely honey color they all were when new and now almost q dark brown to the point even when polished the grain is almost invisable! As I recall, I paid $18.95 for it back then. Been the best $20.00 I ever spent ( taxman had to be paid 'ya know! ) for a pipe !

Whats the point to have a pipe if not to smoke. I think Kaywoodies smoke really darn good, not many people consider them anymore. Estates can be had on eBay pretty cheap, I always hunt for their old stingerless models.

I will smoke it at some point, no big hurry...I have plenty of great pipes in the meantime.
Yeah, I lacked specificity when I started the thread....We know that Savinelli, GBD, Dunhill, etc.. all have a great track record turning out some beautiful pipes, but companies like Kaywoodie and Grabow have turned out some great lookers that perform as well as they look also.
Here on the forum, someone recently refinished a Grabow? that had a factory finish that hid some really nice grain.

It is great to see companies like Savinelli, committed to turning out consistently good smoking pipes, even their seconds sold as the Rossi line get generally good reviews. Some companies that we think of in terms of yesteryear, and a workingman's pipe, really excelled in certain lines that they marketed. What is yours that you treasure? Mine is a Wally Frank that as of yet, I cannot get up the gumption to smoke since I acquired it unsmoked, very well done in the execution, the drilling is spot on... That is a beautiful pipe. I've actually done some research on the original Rossi brand. It was not created by Sav to sell secondline products like Peteron's Shamrock in Ireland (do they even still make those things? Used to sell them in the airport duty free shops, but I digress).
The Rossi brand was created by two brothers way back over 100 years ago.. It was a local legendary brand in Italy. So when Savinelli purchased them they took good care of what was already a great pipe brand. Not sure when exactly that happened I'd have to read some more.

Rossi was once the world's largest pipe manufacturer, and more prestigious than Savinelli.
But Rossi took the decline of the pipe industry hard, and liquidated. Savinelli scooped up the remnants.

Wally Frank was the biggest pipe dealer in America, and they used all kinds of makers for their own-brand pipes. Everything from Sparta Industries all the way up to Comoy's and Charatan occasionally got a Wally Frank stamp on the side. It's a pity your Viking has no country of origin or shape number stamp. We'll never really know who made it!

For a working mans pipe, I have to go with Grabow. The Ajustomatic’s are great smokers and some don’t look too shabby either.
