It's so humid here because of the rain from the hurricane that I'm seeing the cake in a number of my pipes soften almost to the point of turning into liquid at the top of the bowls. Anybody else ever have this problem?

Yup, I roll up a half sheet of paper towel and give the chamber a number of twists stuffed with paper towel.....works well for me. Your next smoke will be much sweeter.......good luck.

Well, not out here in Oregon. That's interesting Jim. I wonder if there's enough humidity present over time, that the cake would start to mildly separate from the bowl wall?

Mark, it does get extremely soft. What Jim is dealing with I’ve also experienced here in NC. No need to use a reamer at this point. Paper towels will leave a very thin layer on the walls of the chamber.

I've got a bit of that here in PA. Been rainy and humid here too. I think we're already at or above our average annual rainfall already. I just wipe the pipes lightly; I'm concerned about chunks coming out if wiped too vigorously.

Hasn't happened to me in Ireland. Maybe the heat AND humidity has this effect.
Good to know what to do if I ever emigrate.

That's just normal for me in South Georgia. My cake never seems to get hard. Just a semi-gum like coating. I can use my pipe tool with very very little pressure and scrape it all right off. It has the consistancy of dried pine sap.

Better to wipe it or leave it be............? First post...welcome to the forum. Thanks.....Wiping it might smear the cake and make it un-even......think I would just leave it till the humidity go back to normal...and smoke a different pipe that's not affected.

Up here in Michigan the struggle with cake is real, so I tend to use coffee filters. Works out fine for me.

...a phenomenon unknown to me here in CA... but I don't believe cakes provide any benefit whatsoever, so I wouldn't have noticed it anyway...

I am in the Ohio River Valley and have worked in New Orleans, the humidity is similar in both places. Awful. It's been so wet here this summer that I have found it affecting the amount of water in the last 1/4 of the bowl. I am not sure if I have smoked a bowl to the bottom all summer long because of the humidity. I'm generally tapping it out when it starts to sizzle from the moisture. If I don't, I will burn the crap out of my mouth.
I dry my stuff for up to a day in the AC, so that's not the issue.
I wondered when smoking in very HIGH humidity conditions, how much more H2O is produced during combustion? I was in Reno Tahoe (much dryer) and found the dryer environment to really help.
Maybe the increase of water this summer in particular have crept into the cake?

Being a cake hater I keep it paper thin by using the good ol cork screw paper towel. If you want that cake rock hard take a dab of honey and cover it before your next smoke. A tip from the land of 90% humidity the swamp known as Houston.

I have been finding this discussion interesting. I wonder if the carbon bonding strength is getting weak due to the moisture. Or if it is the bond between the carbon and other materials has weakend. Other material meaning particles of tobacco, pipe cleaner fibers, dust/dirt, body oil from the fingers, etc..
We may never know because we don't have a lab to reproduce the conditions and the equipment for the testing.

Is what pipe smokers consider carbon cake really just soot unburned organic matter? If pipe cake had the magical properties some claim should be coat the space shuttle in it? Should we coat are pipes with old time log cabin chinking known as pipe mud? Would the tar I let build up in my coffee cup protect my pipe bowl better? Is JB weld better than pipe mud? Should smoke stack scrubbers be installed on tobacco to cut down on global warming? I say I say son it's a joke.

My Arizona buddy, Waylon says: “Never leave your cake out in the rain, Jim”... you could cause MacArthur park to melt.
