...give up the cake, guys, lol... Hell no, i let it build up even on the rim. Makes it look loved (and smoked). I fill 'em to nearly overflowing and light up. ...if it works for you, that's great...

An acquaintance of mine from London (who is now deceased), was a member of the gentlemen's club "Boodles", and suggested to me in the 1970s that the notion of "cake" in a briar pipe was floated by Alfred Dunhill at some point in order to sell more pipes. I have no documentation to back this up, so it is apocryphal. FWIW, folks... don't shoot the messenger, lol... Sounds like something Alfred would do. He was one helluva marketer of what he sold!

I'm of the mind that pipes are little briar furnaces to burn tobacco in. Furnaces get black, so what? Too many other things to worry about.

Those who, like slowroll, believe the pipes are a tool to burn tobacco. Those who believe pipes are a work of art and appreciate that and the collectiblity of the hobby. Those who are a bit of both.

Ah, but i'm not the prototype of category #1, because I'm firmly in category #3. Tools can/are be works of art. I think my machine tools are works of art and I don't fuss when there's oil and chips on them.--they're doing what they are supposed to do.

I should have figured that, given the work that you do yourself.

You cannot go wrong with any blend that is primarily natural tobacco. Overly moist or topped tabac would cause problems in my opinion, but I'm no expert. A lot of guys recommended basic burley blends when I asked the question back when I started. Personally, I like Dunbar or maybe a mild aro like Dunhill RR, Carter Hall or SWR. Those blends are nice and dry and the toppings are too mild to ghost.

Swr leaves a nice taste and burns well. I say it leaves the friendliest ghost.

If I am not sure what I am going to dedicate the pipe to I use a burley and yep it is usually Haunted Bookshop.

I use Ennerdale...........................(just joking).
Back in the day I used PA or Sir Walter Raleigh to break them in. Now I subscribe to what others have written on here. I just load it up with whatever I'm going to be smoking in it regularly. Smoke several half bowls and then I don't worry about it after that.
