I recently bought my first new pipe in a long time (my "I survived" pipe, described in another thread). It got me thinking about break-in tobaccos. My choice is Haunted Bookshop because it tastes good and doesn't leave a funny taste in the pipe. What's yours?

Can never go wrong with Carter Hall or Prince Albert to break in a pipe. Lately I have been using Old Joe Krantz mostly because I want to use up my last few Oz. Haunted Bookshop has really grown on me and since discovering it OJK has tasted a little heavy on the perique to me.

nothing special here. Whatever I have the most of that's opened. Haven't broke in a new pipe since '12 anyhow!

To break in a pipe? I've said it before and ill say it again for me, prince alberts is a go to for breaking in a new briar. Its nothing extravagant but the nice consistency of cut burns low and slow, while building a nice cake.

I just smoked a maiden voyage bowl full of Shortcut to Mushrooms in a poker I made the other day. My usuals are Carter Hall or something of the straight Burley ilk - only because I've seen that suggested so many times. I'd say, though, smoke whatever ya want in it, and let the chips fall where they may.

I think Haunted Bookshop is a good choice. Another one that I can recommend is Pegasus.

Doesn't matter. Break in the heal first with half bowls of your preferred choice and move on from there.

I firmly believe in breaking in a pipe with whatever you plan to smoke in it throughout its life, whether it's one tobac or many. It'll have the ghost of what you want. It'll also be more pleasant to break in.

Five Brothers. Second - Daughters and Ryan Two Timer regular. Both all burley, no additives. You can't mess it up, and you get high while you're doing it

Pegasus tends to be my break in tobacco. However, I often vary from that. If a pipe is going to be a straight Va pipe, I break it in using a straight Va. The Danish Stanwell which I bought here in Amsterdam is getting broken in with the Troost Slices which I bought here.

...Burley works best for me, but I understand the idea that you just load the pipe up with what you like and call it good...

I'd be in the camp that says, smoke a variety of what tickles your fancy.
I've learned, from my friends here, that I used to think too much about this hobby.

SWR and a local B&M blend, Sturk's Nutty Unscented.
Many of my EU brothers on the continent swear by any of Tabac Manil's Semois offerings.

… I use a variety of tobaccos...normally, CH, PA or Lane Burley over the last 10 years...before that it was usually original Condor Plug/Long Cut...

I've always used the main tobacco I was smoking at the time i.e. when 759 was my blend of choice, that's what I used, when Royal Yacht then that's what I used . Has worked well for me for the past 50 years so will be how I do it for the next 50 ! A good all va blend would be what I'd use today.

Because I enjoy straight Virginia’s and VaPers I usually break in a new pipe with a good red Va.. I’m fortunate enough to have a good supply of McC 5100 and I’ve used it to break in most of my new pipes. I also enjoy Burley blends so sometimes I use Ready Rubbed Match. If I have a pipe that I want to dedicate to blends containing Latakia I like to use English Oriental Supreme. Though my palate isn’t as sensitive as many others it seems that I sometimes get a hint of the tobacco used to break in the pipe. YMMV - Having said this I must confess that I don’t have many pipes dedicated to just on genre of tobacco. After they have been sufficiently broken in Burley blends are apt to be smoked in pipes broken in with a red Va. and the same for pipes broken in with a Burley blend and are very often used for Va.’s or VaPers. I even have a couple of pipes that get loaded with any type blend that I happen to be craving at the moment regardless of the type of tobacco used in the breaking in process. The reason I use these specific blends is that in my experience they build cake rather quickly. Again YMMV. The basics of breaking in a pipe require a build-up of cake. For this I think one could use any blend they enjoy smoking with good results.

I'm curious what it is about burley that makes it a go to for some many when breaking in a pipe? Is it a lack of ghosting, cake build up speed, something else? Breaking in and cake discussions fascinate me but I have little experience with it due mostly to smoking almost exclusively meerschaum. And cobs.

Burley overall smokes cooler and drier since there is less natural sugar in the leaf. It can be highly flavored, but the otc blends generally aren't, and most of the otcs burn fairly even with fewer relights most of the way to the bottom. This is all in my own experience and ymmv.

I'm obviously no expert, but took the advice from others in the past and have used Carter Hall for all of my new and freshly refurbed briars.
Works fine, best as I can tell, and is a quite pleasant smoke.

...give up the cake, guys, lol... Hell no, i let it build up even on the rim. Makes it look loved (and smoked). I fill 'em to nearly overflowing and light up.

An acquaintance of mine from London (who is now deceased), was a member of the gentlemen's club "Boodles", and suggested to me in the 1970s that the notion of "cake" in a briar pipe was floated by Alfred Dunhill at some point in order to sell more pipes.
I have no documentation to back this up, so it is apocryphal.
FWIW, folks... don't shoot the messenger, lol...
