Just finished my first bowl of this blend and thought I'd give my first impressions of it. First off I'd have to agree this IS NOT a duplicate of McCs 5199 RC but it's damn close and equally as good ! It comes a bit moist and I think I'll give it a bit of drying time before my next bowl. In the bag it has a similar acetic aroma which comes from the fermented Red Va's in it same as the old 5100 RC . Not Ketchup! It's a nice fine ribbon cut which packs easily and lights the same ( I used wooden matches) Burns well and has a semi-sweet flavor and room note as well. Puff like a choo choo and it'l bite you but most va's do this for me so I sip, sip and we get along just fine ! It has an average # of relites for me but then I'm always putting a pipe down and letting it go out while smoking. It maintains the semi sweet red va note from first light till you hit bottom and burns to a nice dry ash with no goop at the bottom. All in all I'd say Sutliff has blended a winner for Red Va lovers and I've already put in my order for another #. Cellar'd I'm sure this would be a bang-up Va in 5 years or so. In closing I'd have to say Sutliff has blended a blend which will stand on it's own in the future. JMHO

Michael, excellent review on Sutliff 515 RC. I have a sample on the way from a friend who also stated it needs to be air dried before smoking but with age this tobacco should be a superb smoke.

Nice review! Definitely dry it down. You get a lot more flavor from it when you do. I've been using it in my blending experiments rather than use the 5100 that I have and it works beautifully.

I never had the original 5100, but I really like this blend. I think it stands on its own very well.
I'm happy Sutliff seems to be upping its game to fill some voids that apparently needed filling. I'm still new to serious pipe smoking, and never had the chance to smoke a lot of the original well loved blends. Now, I feel, like I have the chance to experience some blends that are close to, or at least a good replacement for, blends that had stood the test of time.

Now it's "arr". I'll let it stand. Ahoy!

It is a good review. I have more desire to purchase it because it is Sutliff. I've only had a few McC blends that I was keen on. The one I wish I had bought more of was their 605 Pastry.

I have a half a pound of 5100 jarred. It goes pretty quickly once I start into it. I should probably start aging some 515 in the cellar.
