Was just looking over my collection of 110 pipes and realized I had over half were Blasted. 70 to be exact! I never conciously aquired Blasted pipes over Smooth finished , but I've realized I do prefer a beautiful gnarly Blast finish ! I like the 3d look the grain has as well as the tactile feel one gets of the grain! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a beautiful straight or flame grain, just like the blasts better! Curious what you guys prefer and why !

I like smooths best, but also appreciate a richly grained sandblasted briar. Rusticated would come in 3rd for me.

I enjoy smooth , but also like volcano tops on the rim. Nothing like grain or Birdseye on a pipe, I think at some point Ill get into others, just prefer smooth for now ..

I probably have an equal number of both, but sandblasts have fascinated me since I began smoking a pipe (45 years and counting). It's the look of a good 'blast, and the feel in the hand.
I don't know if it affects the smoking properties. I remember reading somewhere that 'blasts tend to be "softer" briar, but I don't know anything about that either.
VERY few "rusticated" pipes appeal to me.

My pipes consist of roughly 70% smooth and 30% either sandblasted or rusticated. For me I have no preference.....it depends on the grain and overall quality of the briar and how well the pipe smokes. If a “ blast “ is done to bring out the ring grain I’d definitely prefer that over rusticated. I own a few pipes that cost $30.00 NOS.....one smooth with a stunning grain...one with that perfect blast and the third was rusticated with the contrast stain method that really looks as great as it smokes👍👍👍. Those 3 pipes mentioned above smoke far superior than pipes in my collection that cost $400.00 plus!!!
I’m still looking for an Edwards nosewarmer in good shape, smooth or rusticated. If any member of the Patch notices such a pipe PLEASE send me a PM.....thank you in advance!!!

My eyes prefer the smooth with it's beautiful grain while my hands prefer sandblasted / rusticated. I've gotta add another one to this. This makes sense in my head.

Although a have quite a few blasted because of my Jarl collection, I prefer smooth by far. Also what I prefer to make.

Tactile I must feel my tool of choice. If I get really rich it will be birdseye.

I’m a grain junkie; Smooth is my preference. However, I do like a good blast which accentuates the grain.

Yeah, smooth pipes are what I like best too, because I like looking at the grain and the feel of them. I have plenty of blast and rusticated finishes too, but I find myself drawn to the smooth pipes more.

… 70% of my pipes are blast/rustic...I like the feel and to my sense, a cooler smoke...however, I do have some smooth pipes that I enjoy as well...

It really depends on the overall look for me. Most of mine are smooth, but my Dracula 999 just didnt look right in the smooth version (to me). The blast gives it character.
I would join the ranks with the grain and birdseye and all that, but honestly, I dont really care what mine look like as long as they smoke good. I have a Pipemaker pipe that I sanded down that sports 7 fills and is ugly as can be. But, it smokes wonderfully. Dont get me wrong though, I love a good looking smooth pipe.

Blasted and rusticated are more than ok with me, depending on the quality of the work, but my first preference has always been smooth finish.

I prefer the look and feel of a smooth finish. It seems to give me more of a feeling of a finely finished piece of briar in my hands and I like to see the grain.

I like both. A quick glance at my collection, however, reveals more smooths.

I like them all - smooth, blasted, and rusticated. I generally favor blasted over rusticated, but it all depends on the particular pipe. That said, I'd estimate that 60% of my pipes are smooth and 40% are either blasted or rusticated.
