I have been experimenting with some of my own blends. I have some aromatics that I like the smell and taste of but I generally don't get the nic or satifaction as much from them as much as the other types.
I purchased some whole leaf aztec rustica and it was pretty fresh,I have been air drying it in my mancave for about a month now.It was pure white when I received it, now its the color of cocoa powder.I'm not sure how long it takes or what the final color should be when its ready.Internet searches haven't had detailed info other than to air dry 4 to 8 weeks.
I'm hoping to be able to mix a small amount with some of my Aros to get what I am looking for...
One of my blends that I am currently smoking is S&G brown #4 with some perique and cavendish, sometimes I add a little 5 brothers to it because it burns better and cleaner.
Does anyone have any advice or info on the curing of the aztec rustica? I'm hoping to mix it with some sutliff pumpkin spice, or maybe some cult abacus.
Does anyone do this type of blending,I can't imagine I'm the only one that mixes Aros with strong tobaccos.
I'm after the full tobacco strength with the smell and some flavorings of the Aros.

I’ve mixed bold dark Kentucky with SWRA for a bit of an extra Nic hit. Also a good smoke👍

I like to mix a little Five Brothers into Aromatics. Gives them some N without negatively impacting their flavor.

Thank you for that vote of confidence ... hope I can help now! Tell us more about this Rustica. Where did you get it from? What case (moisture level) was it in? Any info at all provided by the seller? Thanks!

I bought a pound of nicotiana rustica, it was pure white when I received it. Very pliable and too wet to burn. It has dried out to a nice brown color. I ran some clothes line in my shop and used clothes pins to hang it from the line I purchased from leafonly.com. its been hanging now for about 5 weeks,it still pliable but probably smokable. I just thought it would get darker. I have a pasta cutter I'm going use to shred it. I don't know when its going to be ready.... how can I tell. Many online searches just said to sun dry or air dry in a closed area. I picked the latter because it was said to produce less sugar this way.

Honestly ... it sounds like LeafOnly owes you another pound of Rustica. The color should have already been a nice shade of brown and have been much more dried. I fear that what you're describing is leaf that has been becoming "mulch" in the bag due to excessive moisture. A quick click over to their website shows the leaf dried and browned ... as it should be. Since it's still stretchy / pliable, you may be able to finish up the drying and use it but I'd get a refund or replacement if it were me. As for smoking this stuff ... it's strong but pretty bland tasting on its own. You could case it in molasses, chocolate syrup or both to make it more palatable. Mixing it with a higher sugar leaf such as Brightleaf would help too. Good luck and let us know how this turns out.

What does it smell like?
Should be plenty of time ... no mold anywhere? If not, cut it off the main stem and finish drying it. Then, very carefully, smoke a small bowl and tell us how it tastes.

I bought a pound of nicotiana rustica, it was pure white when I received it. White? I wouldn't have expected that. Is that normal for nicotiana rustica before it's dried and aged?

I am not sure but am going to have to think about brown #4 with perique and 5 brothers being a mild aromatic! That Aztec leaf must be medicine grade! Would be interested to hear how it tastes by itself.

Some species of tobacco will color cure more white / pale yellow than others. However, after color curing, the tobacco is thoroughly dried and turns brown. That's why I suspected either an unfinished product or one that had bleached from being "mulched".

Rustica / Mapacho is a very low sugar, air-cured leaf and, by itself, there's not a ton of real flavor.
It's sort of an earthy, somewhat floral, vegetative flavor ... a little like raw Burley.

I ground some up this morning and smoked a bit in a devil cob.Not much flavor kinda like grass or hay.No noticeable nic, it wasn't entirely unpleasant.Maybe it needs more time. Its very bland and would be a great blending if it produced the nic I have been reading about.I'm pretty disappointed overall my mouth has been watering for weeks to try it.My next bowl after trying it was a mix of 75% 5 brothers and 25%cult abacus. It was great!
I emailed the place where I purchased it and the Lady that responded said I should have taken pictures. She said that someone went and checked the stock where mine came from but said it all looked and smelled normal.
I have a bunch of seeds that maybe I will plant in the spring because the plants are very cool looking and we have a ton of hummingbirds here and I think they will really enjoy the bright yellow flowers.
I don't know if my leaves were bad or if I didn't properly hang or cure correctly...Maybe I'll grind it up and put it away for awhile. The leaves are pretty dry I may experiment with rehydrating some just to see what happens.
Darin Thanks for the help! and other Forum members...Thanks for knowing and telling me who to ask

You should never have to hang and dry whole-leaf purchased online so you did nothing wrong. Wholeleaftobacco.com will treat you right everytime ... I've heard several bad reports from Leafonly. Also, I'd call them on the phone and demand either a refund or another pound of leaf. Good luck and please let me know anytime I can help ... my pleasure!

Well, I tried it and it didn't burn so well, tasted like leaves.I am unable to source it online, so maybe I will try growing some to see how that turns out.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

I've read in several places that the 5 Brothers is good to add to other blends as the Nic is pretty strong. I've got a pouch and Scrooge says it smokes great...gonna try it, just not today...feeling a little queasy this morning....thank goodness for spell check (queasy is not spelled quesy)

If you order some seed, let me know and we can swap varieties if you want. As for finding Rustica to smoke, look it up under "Mapacho" and you'll likely find some places. Good Luck!
