Hehaka Sapa (Black Elk) crossed my mind this morning.
Smoking a pipe has it's origins in Native American culture.
If you have not already read them, I recommend "Black Elk Speaks" and "The Sacred Pipe".

On my payday list now. I thought Wes Studi had played him once, but he played Black Kettle. Wonderful actor in my top ten actors.
Black Elk lived until 1950, so there should be more on him to find.
First book I read by a Native American was Memoirs of Chief Red Fox. He used to appear on The Tonight Show. I remember he said something to the effect of cigars being part of his long life because they provided a lot of Vitamin C

Just saw him in a newer film "Hostiles" Pretty good movie and he was excellent in that as well.

I will have to remember that. I like Native American culture. The last Wyandotte in this area was Bill Moose. He passed in the 1930s just before turning 100. It is reported that over 10,000 people attended his funeral.
